NW Briefs | Kahne third in Skagit race
Kasey Kahne, the NASCAR star from Enumclaw, took third in his own 30-lap main event Wednesday, the Kasey Kahne Foundation Sprint Car Challenge at Skagit Speedway in Alger. Robby Vaughn was the winner and Brock Lemley was third. Kahne did set the fast time at 12.216 seconds.
SOCCER
Seattle University has opened the men's season with three consecutive road victories after a 2-1 triumph against Cal State-Stanislaus (1-1-1). Jason Cascio and Andrew Kreiter scored for Seattle.
• Kelsey Penn, a freshman from Port Orchard, posted a hat trick in Central Washington women's 5-1 victory over Chaminade (0-1) in Honolulu. Penn has scored five goals for CWU (2-0-1).
• Freshman Gibson Bardsley, out of Mount Si High, scored the winning goal in the 84th minute as Western Washington (2-0) was a 2-1 winner over Cascade (0-1) in men's action in Bellingham.
• Amanda Font, a senior from Federal Way, scored 52 seconds into the game as Western Washington women (2-0) were 2-0 winners over Northwest (0-1-1).
ROWING
Anna Mickelson and Mary Whipple, both former University of Washington rowers, continue to help the United States in its bid to defend its title in the women's eights at the FISA World Rowing Championships in Munich, Germany. With a victory in 6:22.20 in the repechage, the Americans are in the finals. In the men's eights, former UW rower Brett Newlin and Olympia's Brodie Buckland helped the U.S. into the semifinals.

Nikole Thompson of Marysville had 18 kills and a .400 hitting percentage as Seattle University (2-3) recorded a 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-13) volleyball victory over Northwest (0-1) at home.
• Washington State (5-0) posted a 3-1 (20-30, 30-22, 30-26, 30-24) volleyball victory over Gonzaga (2-2) in Spokane.
• Heidi VanDerveer, a former assistant with the Seattle Storm, has been named associate head basketball coach at San Diego State.

Jeff Coston, a teaching pro at Semiahmoo, took a one-stroke lead after a 68 in the Pacific Northwest Section Senior PGA at Avalon Golf Links in Burlington.
• Kristen Tan, 14, will represent The First Tee of Greater Seattle as the partner for Bob Gilder of the Champions Tour during the First Tee Open at Pebble Beach this weekend.

Vashon Island resident Susan Nattrass will defend her title in women's trap next month at the ISSF World Championships in Nicosia, Cyprus.
