NW Briefs: Mackenzie wins Pac-10

ORO VALLEY, Ariz. — Washington senior Paige Mackenzie shot 3-under 69 in the final round of the 20th Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship, giving her a total score of 5-under 211 and making her the Pac-10 champion.

The two-time All-American, who started the round one stroke off the lead, shot four birdies with just one bogey. Her 69 was the best round of the day and was the third-best round recorded in the tournament.

Mackenzie, who outdistanced runner-up Alissa Kuczka of Arizona State by four strokes, becomes the first Husky to win medalist honors at the Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship, which began in 1987.

"This just puts an exclamation point on Paige's great career," Washington coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. "It's certainly the biggest individual win for any player on the women's side in the history of our program."

The 27th-ranked Huskies shot 14-over 302, finishing sixth at 46-over 910. UCLA won its third straight title by one stroke over Arizona State, finishing at 15-over 879.

At the Pac-10 men's championship in Palm Desert, Calif., UW finished second to UCLA.

Softball

• Washington split a doubleheader at top-ranked UCLA. The Huskies won the opener 3-2 in 12 innings and dropped the nightcap 7-6. Washington is 30-16, 4-8 in the Pac-10. UCLA is 37-5, 9-3 in the Pac-10.

• Puget Sound beat cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran 4-2 in a Northwest Conference game at PLU Field.

Other sports

• California beat UW 4-3 in a men's tennis match to conclude the teams' regular season in Ojai, Calif. The Huskies (18-5, 5-2) tied Cal (15-6) for third in the Pac-10.

• Steve Severin, a 6-foot-10 basketball player at Hanford High School in Richland, has signed a national letter of intent to play at Western Washington.

• Mike Dorr, a 6-foot-5 freshman basketball player from Highline Community College, signed with Carroll College (Helena, Mont.).
