Murder charges filed in case from 1968
Prosecutors say DNA evidence links convicted killer John Dwight Canaday, 59, to the previously unsolved stabbing death of Sandra Darlene Bowman in Ballard nearly 36 years ago.
The body of Bowman, a newlywed and pregnant 16-year-old, was discovered by her husband in December 1968, when he returned home from work. Bowman had been bound and stabbed 57 times, court documents say.
Two years ago, cold-case detectives submitted evidence collected during the murder investigation to the state crime lab, where scientists found a genetic match to Canaday, according to court documents filed in King County Superior Court.
The death sentence of Canaday — who was convicted and sentenced to die in 1969 for the highly publicized rape and killings of Mary Annabelle Bjornson, 21, and Lynne Carol Tuski, 20 — was overturned when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the death-penalty laws were unconstitutional.
Seattle
Man who reportedly kicked Leykis is freed
A 28-year-old Seattle man arrested last week in connection with a reported assault on radio shock jock Tom Leykis was released from custody Tuesday.
Leykis said he was kicked in the head by a listener who said Leykis had insulted him on the air.
Police said that after taking accounts of the incident from Leykis, his female companion and the suspect, the man was released without charges.
The incident, which occurred early Aug. 23 outside the Five Point Cafe near Belltown, left Leykis with 17 stitches above his right eye, Leykis said.
Leykis, whose show is broadcast in Seattle on KQBZ-FM (100.7), is known for taunting callers and once called the men of Seattle the biggest wimps in the world.
Port Townsend
400 pounds of pot seized from boat
Authorities seized about 400 pounds of marijuana from an unmanned sailboat adrift off Port Townsend on Wednesday night.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, a Washington State Ferries captain sailing between Port Townsend and Keystone first saw the boat adrift about 5:30 p.m., and a private company towed it to a marina. Crew members boarded the boat to look for the owner and found several bags containing packages of marijuana.
Investigators later found a total of 20 bags of marijuana, which authorities say could be valued at up to $1.2 million.
Glen Cove, Jefferson County
Investigators try to identify remains
A 14-year-old girl stumbled upon some human skeletal remains last week in the Glen Cove area of Jefferson County, sheriff's officers said yesterday.
Investigators think the remains were exposed after recent ground movement. According to the Sheriff's Office, the remains appear to be more than 50 years old, and a wear pattern on the teeth and the shape of the skull indicate the person was of Native American ancestry.
Investigators from Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are working with Jamestown S'Klallam tribal specialists, a King County forensic anthropologist and staffers from the state's Historic Preservation Office in Olympia to examine the remains.
McChord Air Force Base
Runway repaired, C-17 planes back
C-17 cargo planes have resumed operations at this military base south of Tacoma.
Transport planes and about 400 personnel were displaced to other bases for a month during an $11 million project to repair the base's 10,100-foot runway. The repair was done in three phases. The entire runway had to be closed only for the final phase, which was done in August.
About 150 airmen who were assigned elsewhere were welcomed back at a ceremony Wednesday, along with seven of the cargo jets.
