City Light settles promotion suit

SEATTLE — Seattle City Light has agreed to pay $200,000 to a former Filipino-American employee who claimed he was wrongfully denied promotions, the man's lawyer said yesterday.

Paul Nonog, 63 and a management systems analyst in the utility's Rockport office from 1981 to 2002, alleged he was wrongly denied two promotions four years ago.

In each case, a less-qualified white applicant was hired, and Nonog was required to train them, said his attorney, John Sheridan.

In addition to the $200,000, City Light also agreed to rehire and promote Nonog, giving him a senior management systems-analyst job.

City Light spokesman Bob Royer couldn't be reached for comment.

McChord airman charged in child-luring case

TACOMA — A 22-year-old Seattle man was arrested and charged yesterday with two felony counts of child luring, four counts of first-degree attempted kidnapping and two counts of attempted child rape.

Jameson Phillip Joaquin is a member of the U.S. Air Force and is stationed at McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma. McChord officials would not release details on his rank or duties. Joaquin remains in Pierce County Jail in lieu of $1.75 million bail.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said Joaquin is connected with five incidents in Pierce County.

In one of the incidents, Joaquin allegedly tried to lure an 8-year-old girl with $150 as she walked to school Jan. 28, police said.

Man faces manslaughter charges in deadly fall

SEATTLE — A 42-year-old Seattle resident has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a man whom the suspect allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs last year. Alonzo Carroll was charged with first-degree manslaughter in King County Superior Court yesterday in connection with the death of Holt Rood.

According to police and prosecutors, both men were waiting in line at the Downtown Emergency Services Center on Sept. 13 when Rood insulted Carroll with racial slurs.

Carroll pushed Rood down the concrete stairs, according to court documents, and Rood later died of his injuries.

20-year-old struck, killed by wrecking ball identified

EVERETT — The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office has identified a man who died after he was struck by a wrecking ball at a construction site Monday as Justin A. Glaser, 20.

Everett Fire Marshal Warren Burns said fire crews were dispatched to the site at 920 13th St. in Everett at 8:47 a.m. Steve Pierce, a spokesman for the state Department of Labor and Industries, said the agency is investigating the accident.

Pit bull owner pleads not guilty over Auburn dog attack

SEATTLE — A 23-year-old Auburn woman pleaded not guilty in King County Superior Court yesterday to the charge of keeping a dangerous dog.

Prosecutors charged Janell Amber Roberts with the felony last week, alleging that Roberts' pit bull attacked and killed a neighbor's dog even after she had been warned to keep the dog under control.

On Jan. 1, Roberts' dog had been let outside on its own when it left the yard and killed the 14-year-old dog of a neighbor.

The 86-year-old neighbor was also injured, prosecutors said, when he tried to save his dog.

Blue Angels jet fighter up for auction on eBay

You can now have your very own Navy F/A-18A Hornet jet fighter — but some assembly may be required.

The price for the jet, which formerly belonged to the Navy's Blue Angels aerial demonstration team, is just over $1 million on the auction firm eBay, or about $9 million for a buyer who wants it assembled, painted and certified ready-to-fly.

Only legal U.S. residents can bid. The auction is scheduled to end tomorrow.

An F/A-18 in 1997 cost the military $28 million, according to the Blue Angels' official Web site.

Mike Landa of Landa and Associates, the Washington state brokerage that has listed the fighter on the Internet auction service, told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Virginia that the jet is in parts and came out of military service in 1994. Landa wouldn't identify the owner but said he came by it legally.

The jet can fly about 1,400 mph and climb 30,000 feet in a minute.
