Girls basketball roundup: Mount Tahoma coach nears milestone 200th victory

TACOMA — Mount Tahoma gave coach Calvin McHenry his 199th career victory and created a three-way tie for first place in the Narrows League Bay Division with an 89-74 girls basketball victory over Foss Friday night.

The 13th-ranked Thunderbirds, 15th-ranked Foss and 16th-ranked Capital of Olympia are each 11-1 overall and 5-1 in league games.

"It was for first place and a really big game for these kids. Our kids stepped up," said McHenry, who previously coached at Tahoma in the South Puget Sound League.

McHenry could get his milestone 200th victory in Mount Tahoma's next game, at Lincoln of Tacoma, where he teaches.

Mystic Davis led five Thunderbirds in double figures with 22 points. Treonna Wilkerson scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter for Mount Tahoma as it blew open a close game with a 28-14 finishing run.

Shaunt'e Nance scored 21 points, Melissa Knittel 16 and Jasmin Bolong-Pleasant 15 for Foss.

At Bush 37, University Prep 21 — Sophomore center Kelsey Golitz had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Blazers (2-9, 2-4) to an Emerald City League win. Raija Sanford led the Pumas 0-10, 0-6) with 12 points.

At Overlake 57, Charles Wright 34 — The Owls used an 18-0 run in the third quarter to break open a tight game and hand Charles Wright its first loss in the Emerald City League's East Division. Senior forward Krystal Barghelame scored 20 points and hit four three-pointers for Overlake (7-4, 5-1). Amanda MacKenzie came off the bench for the Owls to score 15 points, 13 in the second half. Overlake snapped a two-game losing streak that included a 26-point loss at Cedar Park Christian on Thursday. Lindsey McFerran, second in the league in scoring (18.1 points per game), led Charles Wright (6-4, 4-1) with 16 points.

At Seattle Academy 45, Annie Wright 18 — Seattle Academy led 13-4 after one quarter and 28-6 at halftime of the Emerald City League game. Terra DeLong had 11 points for Seattle Academy (4-9, 4-5). Annie Wright is 1-7.

Late Friday games

At Foster 63, Vashon Island 48 — Valencia Doty scored 18 points and Marcia Severson 15 for the Bulldogs (3-6, 2-1), who trailed 29-18 at halftime in the Nisqually League game. Foster outscored Vashon 45-19 in the second half. Jennifer Osgood led the Pirates (2-8, 0-3) with 16 points.

At Archbishop Murphy 65, Concrete 37 — Alicia Bourke and Ellie Frahm had double-doubles for the third-ranked Wildcats (11-0, 3-0) in a Northwest 1A League romp. Bourke had 12 points and 15 rebounds. Frahm collected 12 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Kasey Swanson led Concrete (2-7, 0-3) with 10 points.

At King's 49, Life Christian 23 — The seventh-ranked Knights held the 15th-ranked Eagles (11-3, 4-1) to just two points in the first quarter and one point in the fourth in a matchup of Chinook League leaders. Sara Mosiman's 13 points led King's (9-2, 5-0).

Bellevue Christian 55, at Seattle Christian 44 (OT) — Melissa Reich had 16 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots as the Vikings (4-7, 2-3) outlasted the Warriors (6-7, 1-4) in overtime in a Chinook League thriller. Laura Santie, who had 16 points, 15 rebounds and four steals for Seattle Christian, dribbled the length of the floor with seven seconds left in the fourth quarter and hit a layup to force overtime. Holly Tomlin scored 15 points for Bellevue Christian.

At Shoreline Christian 39, Snohomish County Christian 28 — Allison Vanderwerff's 1 points, eight assists and five steals led the Crusaders (4-7, 1-1) past the Lions (7-4, 1-2) in the Northwest B League. Tara Holgate, a 6-4 center, had 14 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks for Snohomish County Christian.
