Petitions to recall two Marysville School Board members filed today

EVERETT — A lawyer representing three Marysville residents today filed two separate petitions for recalling School Board members Helen Mount and Ron Young.

The effort to recall was filed by Shannon Bartlett, Deborah Vincelette and Lisa Ann Griffith. Griffith's name appeared on the ballot as a School Board candidate this fall, but soon after she filed for election, Griffith threw her support behind eventual winner Vicki Gates.

Gates, Carol Jason and Michael Kundu defeated three incumbents in last month's election. The three challengers won overwhelmingly in a district that weathered a 49-day teachers strike earlier this fall, and the three had the support of the 650-member Marysville Education Association.

Mount and Young serve through 2005 and have said they will not step down.

The Snohomish County Auditor's office will forward the residents' petitions to the county prosecutor's office for the purpose of preparing a ballot title, and to Snohomish County Superior Court so that a judge can determine whether there is merit to the residents' complaints. The residents would then have to collect signatures toward the recall effort.

County Auditor Bob Terwilliger has said a recall measure could appear on the ballot as early as next spring.
