Mosque damage charges are filed

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — An Auburn man has been charged with felony malicious harassment in the vandalism and attempted arson of a mosque. Prosecutors allege that Shawn Deroy Urvina, 36, and two teenage boys broke windows and tried to set fire to a window curtain at the Masjid Omar Al Farooq Mosque on Nov. 2. The vandalism caused an estimated $1,500 in damage.

The two Mountlake Terrace juveniles, ages 17 and 15, were charged with harassment in Snohomish County Juvenile Court.

The younger teen also is charged with second-degree arson. The older one has pleaded guilty and agreed to testify in the other two cases, said David Kurtz, King County deputy prosecutor.

Urvina, who was charged Wednesday, was being held on $25,000 bail. Kurtz said Urvina has a second-degree assault conviction and seven misdemeanor convictions in King County.

Snohomish County supporters of flight center seek backing

EVERETT — Backers of the proposed National Flight Interpretive Center hope to open the attraction by the end of next year, but key financial support remains to be won.

The $27.5 million center at the Snohomish County Airport-Paine Field would be housed in a 64,000-square-foot building with space to exhibit and restore planes, an education center, meeting rooms and eventually a large-format theater and 110-room hotel.

The center is a joint effort of the Seattle-based Museum of Flight Foundation, Boeing, Snohomish County and the airport.

It still needs the approval of the Museum of Flight board of directors. Backers also hope to persuade the Snohomish County Council to allow the center to receive about $7.5 million in sales-tax dollars under a plan similar to the ones that helped build Seattle's Safeco Field and Seahawks football stadium.

The rest of the center's cost would be raised through private sources.

County Councilman Gary Nelson expressed skepticism that the funding mechanism would be approved. Nelson said he wasn't sure the airport should be used for an economic development project.

Nelson, of Edmonds, also worries the center would compete with a regional center under consideration by the city of Edmonds.

Longview teenager killed after car hits tour bus

CASTLE ROCK, Cowlitz County — A 17-year-old Longview boy was killed and seven people were injured Thursday when the teen's car collided head-on with a tour bus, starting a four-vehicle accident.

The State Patrol identified the teenager as Karl F. Halverson.

A 15-year-old female passenger in his car was taken to Legacy Emmanuel Hospital in Portland, in critical condition.

The car was traveling east on state Highway 504, the main road to Mount St. Helens, about 4:25 p.m. when it veered into the oncoming lane and struck the bus, said State Patrol Officer Carol Edwards.

Two other eastbound cars hit the teenager's car, which was totaled. Two people from those cars were injured and taken to St. John Hospital in Longview, as were four people on the bus.

All six were treated and released, said hospital spokeswoman Penny Cowden.

Some wreckage of EA-6B jet discovered near site of crash

FORKS, Clallam County — Navy search and rescue workers have recovered some equipment from the wreckage of an EA-6B Prowler jet that crashed near here during a training exercise from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

Navy investigators must still decide whether to airlift larger pieces of wreckage, Olympic National Forest spokesman Ken Eldredge said. "If they decide to use a helicopter, and I think they will, weather will play a major factor," Eldredge said on Wednesday.

The crash site, a steep, heavily forested canyon about 20 miles north of Forks, remained closed to the public.

The crew was conducting electronic countermeasure exercises Nov. 15 when the jet went down in heavy rain and fog.

Two instructors and a student ejected from the jet as it went down.

One man suffered a leg injury and was released on crutches from a Port Angeles Hospital last Friday.

Navy officials say there were no bombs or radioactive material aboard the aircraft.

Oregon teen couple missing after taking walk on beach

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. — Officials continued to search yesterday for two teenagers who have been missing since Wednesday, when they didn't return from a beach walk.

Eugene Hyatt, 18, and Kami Vollendroff, 16, left Hyatt's grandparents' house around 10 a.m. Wednesday to look at the tide pools at Boiler Bay State Park just north of Depoe Bay.

The two had been dating, according to relatives. They are from Stayton, which is about 15 miles from Salem.

The Coast Guard searched for the teens yesterday with a helicopter. Beach conditions were dangerous Wednesday, with strong wind gusts and high, stormy seas.
