An amputee-soccer player from Cleveland High School who lost a leg to a bullet in Somalia at age 12 during civil strife was among the student-athletes honored yesterday at the 101 Club's 68th annual high-school luncheon.

Usually, the only students honored at the Scholar Athlete Award Luncheon at the Washington Athletic Club are those who play scholastic sports. Farah Aden was the exception. He is a member of the U.S. national amputee soccer team and has played in an Amputee World Cup.

Two students - MaryAnne Derige of Rainier Beach and Karl Hammersborg of Ballard - were announced as recipients of renewable $1,000 annual scholarships from the 101 Club Foundation. Scholarship alternates are Linda Vu and Michael Hinckley, both of West Seattle.

The guest speaker was Lesle Gallimore, UW women's soccer coach, who told the soon-to-be graduates to remember to say "thank you" to everyone who has helped him.

"Nothing feels better to me or nothing will make your coaches, teachers or parents feel better than a simple `thank you,' " she said. "Let them know what they mean to you."
