Charges issued in 1991 slaying

SPOKANE - Former in-laws of a man shot to death outside his Spokane Valley apartment in 1991 have been implicated in his death, a Spokane County sheriff's detective says.

Peter Ziehen was involved in a child-custody dispute with his estranged wife when he was killed by a shotgun blast Nov. 18, 1991.

Yesterday Ziehen's former brother-in-law, Theil T. Goldberg, 37, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case. He told Spokane County Superior Court Judge Teri Eitzen he provided the shotgun used in Ziehen's slaying.

Later, Goldberg's father, Morris "Mel" Goldberg, 68, was booked into Spokane County Jail for investigation of aggravated first-degree murder. An arrest warrant charging aggravated first-degree murder was issued for 62-year-old Joann Goldberg-Peterson, Theil Goldberg's mother and Mel Goldberg's ex-wife.

She has been in custody in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, since her arrest in October on an unrelated federal firearms charge.

Ziehen, 40, was involved in a custody dispute with his estranged wife, Orinne J. Goldberg, the sister and daughter of those implicated yesterday.
