Shut Down!; Seattle Millennium Celebration At Seattle Center
It looks like the party of the century is turning into the bummer of the century. The Seattle Center's New Year's Eve Millennium Celebration is ending at 6 p.m., when the grounds will be shut down. Score one for the terrorists. There will still be fireworks from the Space Needle at midnight, but you'll have to watch them from somewhere else. Here are the details:
Fireworks: The Space Needle fireworks will go on at midnight as planned, but you'll have to watch them from somewhere outside the Center. The Space Needle will set off more than 1,500 fireworks, which makes it the world's tallest structure-launched fireworks show.
Art Projects. They provide the materials, you make the art. Create your own masks, fabric banners and musical instruments to celebrate the new millennium. Center House, 2-6 p.m.
Millennium Stage. Watch and listen to music and dance performances from Zimbabwe, Brazil, Egypt, Germany and other spots around the world. Center House, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
Millennium Countdown Dance. Scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Center House, this swing-dance event has been moved to 5 p.m. out on the grounds.
Celebration Stage. The Experience Music Project-sponsored concert, scheduled for 9 p.m. at the Mural Amphitheatre, has been canceled.
Security info. The perimeter of Seattle Center will be fenced, with access limited to 10 entrances, including the Monorail, where visual searches will be conducted before you're allowed inside. No alcohol, firearms or fireworks will be allowed in Seattle Center. If you want to save time getting through the lines, leave large bags, backpacks and coolers in your car. Again, you'll have to leave the grounds by 6 p.m.
