Impact newcomers - OT/DT Jamison Hyatt, 6-4, 285, Sr.; TE/OLB Rob Smith, 6-1, 210, Sr.; TE/OLB Kameron Walls, 6-3, 215, Sr.; FB/LB Jon Lumberg, 6-0, 200, Jr.; FB/LB Brian Unguren, 6-0, 200, Jr.; SE/DB Kyle Woods, 6-0, 170, Jr.; OL/DL Barry Landis, 6-0, 190, Jr.; QB Kyle Allred, 6-1, 175, Jr.; TE/OLB Jason Kelso, 6-0, 195, Jr.

Outlook - The Cougars' 4-5 record last season was the team's best since 1990. Bunten thinks the program has turned the corner, which could mean the team's first winning season since 1984. Breckenridge was seventh in KingCo 4A all-purpose yardage last season, the only junior in the top 10. Balzotti gained 502 yards as a junior, second only to Franklin's Ryan Phillips among non-seniors.

EASTLAKE

WOLVES

Location - Sammamish (Lake Washington School District)

Coach - Jeff Chandler, first year

1998 record - 6-3 (tied for third in league)

Returning starters (2 offense, 2 defense) - DT Jason Putnam, 6-1, 202, Sr.; FS Trevor Larsen, 6-1, 185, Sr.; OL Tyler Conger, 6-3, 265, Sr.; C Chris Allen, 6-1, 198, Sr.

Impact newcomers - QB Trevor Larsen, 5-11, 180, Sr.; FB Jesse Smith, 6-1, 200, Jr.; ILB Chris Capelletti, 5-10, 205, Sr.; ILB Mike Johnson, 6-1, 205, Sr.; TE/OLB Bryan Rice, 6-3, 216, Sr.; OLB Steve Johnson, 6-4, 219, Sr.; DB Shahegn Lotfi, 5-10, 180, Sr..

Outlook - The Wolves have a new coach and a new direction, switching to a Wing-T offense under Chandler. Depth will be a problem for a team loaded with seniors last season, but Chandler has been impressed with the strength of his players. Franklin and Garfield are two of Eastlake's first three opponents, which could make for a quick start.

FRANKLIN EARTHQUAKE

Location - Seattle

Coach - Joe Slye, 16th year (85-55)

1998 record - 3-6 (tied for seventh in league)

Returning starters (6 offense, 7 defense) - QB Jordan Slye, 6-3 170, So.; WR Brian Jackson, 5-11, 180, Sr.; RB Michael Helland, 5-8, 175, Sr.; RB/CB Ryan Phillips, 5-10, 180, Sr.; OL/DL Leon Mallett, 5-11, 225, Sr.; OL/DL Devin Bolar, 5-1, 195, Jr.; DT Michael Justice, 6-4, 285, Jr.; LB Eunice Palmer, 6-0, 195, Sr.; S Sean Dade, 5-11, 180, Jr.; LB Robert Whitfield, 5-10, 185, Sr.

Impact newcomers - None.

Outlook - The Earthquake has been best Seattle 4A football school since joining KingCo in 1997, and senior Ryan Phillips is the conference's top returning rusher. Slye is son of the coach, who guides team members on various bicycle outings during summer. As many as 15 went to Portland, Vancouver, B.C., and Hurricane Ridge this summer. Team strength is at skill positions, and the biggest concern is replacing the nucleus of one of the conference's best lines last season.

GARFIELD BULLDOGS

Location - Seattle

Coach - Luther Carr III, second year (0-9)

1998 record - 0-9 (10th in league)

Returning starters (6 offense, 3 defense) - OL Matt Hoissek, 6-7, 305, Sr.; OL/LB Andy Spieth, 6-1, 205, Sr.; OL Waverly Williams, 6-1, 212, Sr.; OL Danny Reed, 6-2, 225, Sr.; RB/LB DeShawn Milliken, 5-8, 240, Jr.; OL/DE Leslie McCraney, 5-9, 220, Jr.

Impact newcomers - WR/DB Jamal Jackson, 6-1, 170, Sr.; WR Terrell Basie, 6-2, 170, Sr.; WR Salem Sobers, 6-3, 175, Sr.; RB Michael Curry, 5-5, 175, Sr.; WR/QB Ed Roy, 6-6, 220, Sr.; QB Issiah Stanbeck, 6-2, 180, So.

Outlook - Bulldogs, coming off winless season, haven't had a winning year since 1992. Coach Luther Carr III is talking about a turnaround year and he instituted a weight-lifting program. The team went to Eastern Washington football camp this summer, and there are more than 60 out for team, including Roy, the senior basketball standout. No. 1 QB is athletic sophomore Issiah Stanbeck, 6-2, 180, described by Carr as "another Ira Davis." Garfield staff has six coaches who played college football.

INGLEMOOR VIKINGS

Location: Bothell (Northshore School District)

Coach - Frank Naish, 21st year (110-79)

1998 record - 4-5 (tied for seventh in league)

Returning starters (4 offense, 8 defense) - QB/DB Caleb Eastman, 6-3, 190, Sr.; OL/DL Scott Jobe, 6-5, 270, Sr.; OL/DL Todd Gowing, 6-4, 265, Sr.; RB/DB Matt Walters, 6-0, 180, Sr.; WR/LB Chris Grekowicz, 6-0, 190, Sr.; WR/DB Ryan Adkins, 6-0, 190, Sr.; WR/DB Rob White, 6-2, 215, Sr.; RB/LB Brady Flynn, 6-0, 210, Sr.

Impact newcomers - RB/DB Jonny Andersen, 5-9, 160, Jr.; WR/DB Germaine Brown, 6-1, 175, Sr.; OL/DL Greg Meyer, 6-7, 290, Sr.; OL/LB Dylan Robertson, 6-1, 205, Jr.; OL/DL Nick Rogers, 6-0, 200, Jr.; RB/LB Todd Slick, 5-10, 175, Jr.; RB/DB Jake Wells, 5-10, 180, Sr.; RB/LB Pat White, 5-9, 185, Sr.

Outlook - Vikings have the makings of a contender. Eastman is regarded as the league's best quarterback, the defense returns eight of 11 starters and all-league candidates Gowing and Jobe lead a deep crew of linemen. Vikings will have to cut down on turnovers after losing a league-high 22 fumbles in '98. Walters, an all-league soccer selection, will have to make up for the departure of RB Ryan Madayag.

JUANITA REBELS

Location - Kirkland (Lake Washington School District)

Coach - Mike Thomas, ninth year (29-44)

1998 record - 6-3 (tied for third in league)

Returning starters (8 offense, 8 defense) - C/DT Steve Cook, 6-4, 280, Sr.; LT/DT Josh Sweeney, 6-5, 253, Sr.; OG Tyler Tachell, 6-1, 242, Sr.; RT Kerry Love, 6-3, 272, Sr.; WR/DB Dominic Branham, 6-0, 170, Sr.; TE/OLB Jake McClain, 6-3, 212, Sr.; QB Josh Parnell, 5-10, 158, Sr.; S Justin Corbett, 5-11, 165, Sr.; P/PK Mike McRae, 5-8, 166, Sr.; CB/HB Ricky Davenport, 6-1, 178, Sr.; ILB Hyrum Conrad, 5-11, 202, Sr.; MLB Travis Eby, 6-1, 202, Sr.

Impact newcomers - RG/NG Matt Freni, 5-10, 248, Sr.; NG/C Russell Quiniola, 5-11, 225, Sr.; WR/DB Jimmy Weber, 5-11, 148, Sr.; DB/WR Jarrett Ermels, 5-9, 149, Sr.; RB/DB Brian McCalister, 5-9, 175, Sr.; RG Skyler Cesarone, 6-2, 234, Sr.

Outlook - Juanita's offensive front has Thomas believing the Rebels will contend for their first playoff berth since 1994. Co-captain Cook is in the middle of an offensive line that returns five starters, including tight end McClain. All six starters on the line can bench-press more than 300 pounds. Davenport has big shoes to fill as Juanita lost league-leading rusher Keegan Tachell and fullback Roshaun Marshall.

LK. WASHINGTON KANGAROOS

Location - Kirkland (Lake Washington School District)

Coach - Tim Tramp, 2nd year (4-5)

1998 record - 4-5 (tied for fifth in league)

Returning starters (7 offense, 5 defense) - QB Chris Danninger, 6-1, 185, Sr.; OL/DL Ryan Clark, 6-3, 250, Sr.; RB/DB Ryan Geddes, 5-11, 180, Sr.; WR/DB Brandon Glasgow, 5-8, 170, Sr.; RB/LB Jared Lyons, 6-0, 190, Sr.; Sr. Shawn McBride, 6-0, 160, Sr.; OL/DL Mick Morrison, 6-5, 340, Jr.; TE/DE Calen Powell, 6-6, 240, Sr.; OL/DL Kiki Sagoian, 6-1, 265, Sr.; RB/LB Jabari Sykes, 6-0, 220, Sr.; DL/TE Nick VanValkenberg, 6-3, 230, Sr.; P.D. Whitfield, 5-11, 170, Sr.

Impact newcomers - OL/DL Mike Whitesel, 5-10, 220, Sr.; WR/DB Faruk Punjani, 5-11, 170, Sr.; OL/DL Jon Hanson, 6-3, 250, Sr.; RB/LB Kevin Weaver, 6-2, 200, Sr.; WR/DB Colin King, 5-11, 185, Sr.; OL/DL Justin Read, 6-3, 250, Jr.; TE/DE John Hurney, 6-1, 190, Jr.; OL/DE Greg Martin, 6-2, 210, Jr.; OL/DL J.W. Vereide, 6-3, 215, Sr.

Outlook - Behind Danninger, the Kangaroos seek their first winning season since 1993 and first playoff berth. Danninger was third in KingCo 4A passing yardage last season, and Division I college prospect Powell added 30 pounds this summer at tight end. Morrison is a 340-pound mountain at tackle. The Kangs' toughest stretch begins the third week with a game at Inglemoor and a home game with Woodinville two weeks later.

REDMOND MUSTANGS

Location - Redmond (Lake Washington School District)

Coach - Pat Graham, first year

1998 record - 10-1 (first), lost 35-33 to Snohomish in quarterfinals of 4A state playoffs

Returning starters - OL/DE Ben Poort, 6-2, 240, Sr.; OL Sean O'Connor, 6-5, 245, Jr.; DB Josh Pelham, 5-8, 170, Sr.; OL/DT Mike Fox, 5-10, 265, Sr.; TE Brian Yarno, 6-1, 235, Sr.

Impact newcomers - DB/WR Ryan Peterson, 5-11, 175, Sr.; OL Terry Andrus, 6-2, 250, Sr.; DB/RB Evan Benjamin, 6-0, 200, Jr.; DB/WR Mike Brindley, 5-9, 165, Jr.; QB Brian Sheppard, 5-11, 165, Jr.; OL/DL Chris Staton, Jr., 5-11, 240, Jr.

Outlook - With only 16 seniors, Redmond is young and learning Graham's one-back offense. Poort is considered one of the league's strongest linemen, and Benjamin is an emerging talent at running back. The biggest question is how transfer Sheppard, son of Seahawk quarterback coach Mike Sheppard, picks up the offense. Repeating last season's school-record 10 wins might be a pipe dream, but contending for a playoff spot isn't out of the question.

ROOSEVELT ROUGHRIDERS

Location - Seattle

Coach - Tom Merrill, second year (2-7)

1998 record - 2-7 (tied for seventh in eighth)

Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense) - QB/FS Zac Corker, 6-1, 185, Sr.; DT/OL Carson Freaman, 5-11, 240, Sr.; CB Andy McIntyre, 5-8, 160, Sr.; WR Joey MacDuff, 5-8, 170, Sr.; TB/WR Nick Meistrell, 6-1, 185, Sr.; LB Eric Schienbein, 6-0, 195, Sr.; RB Duncan Sherrard, 5-8, 170, Sr.; DL/OL Tyler Salvo, 5-10, 180, Sr.; K Adam Lovrovich, 5-9, 170, Sr.

Impact newcomers - TE/DL Leland Savage, 6-5, 240, Sr.; OL/DL Eric Rose, 6-7, 245, Sr.; WR T.J. Sundgren, 5-9, 160, Sr.; RB Robert West, 5-10, 240, Jr.

Outlook - Quarterback Corker is in his fourth year as a starter and has never been as excited for a season. The team had 77 players turn out for fall practice, the largest in Corker's four years. The team is also boosted by Savage and Rose, two basketball players who came out.

WOODINVILLE FALCONS

Location: Woodinville (Northshore School District)

Coach - Terry Agnew, 10th year (57-26)

1998 record - 8-2 (second in league), lost 28-0 to Wilson in first round of state playoffs

Returning starters (6 offense, 4 defense) - OT Joaquin Rodriguez, 6-1, 240, Sr.; OG Kiel Pidgeon, 6-5, 290, Sr.; C Jake Cooney, 5-11, 200, Sr.; OG/DT Zach Hubbell, 6-0, 240, Sr.; OT/DE Greg Lubetkin, 6-2, 240, Sr.; RB/DE Zach Tuiasosopo 6-2, 220, Sr.; ILB/TE Dan Howard, 6-2, 200, Sr.

Impact newcomers - QB/CB Jacob Stern, 5-11, 160, Jr.; CB/RB Josh Stern, 5-11, 160, Jr.; RB/QB Zach Woodward, 5-11, 170, Jr.; FB/LB Kyle West, 5-11, 190, Jr.; LB/FB Ivanhoe Keo, 6-1, 200, Jr.; RB/DB Blake McIntosh, 5-11, 190, Jr.; FB/OLB Alexander Bobirger, 5-10, 190, Sr.; WR/S Kyle McComb, 6-0, 170, Sr.; C/LB Eric Ferger, 5-11, 210, So.; QB/S Kevin Agnew, 6-0, 165, So.; OT/DT Cameron Neel, 6-5, 250, So.; WR/S Jeff Culpepper, 6-0, 170, Sr.; SE/CB Sterling Brown, 6-3, 180, Sr.; OG/DT Zach Albertson, 6-1, 220, Jr.; RB/LB Eric Norris, 5-11, 170, So.

Outlook - Tuiasosopo is playing RB for first time in three years, and he is far and away the most experienced member of the Woodinville backfield. Still, the Falcons are among the three teams favored to win the league because of their returning strength up front. Pidgeon leads the charge on offense, Tuiasosopo at DE on the other side of the ball. Mike Wagner, slated to be the team's starting QB, underwent shoulder surgery after summer-league baseball. Junior Stern and sophomore Agnew, the coach's son, are competing for time under center.
