Royals' Kevin Appier To Make 1998 Debut

KANSAS CITY - Kevin Appier, the one-time ace of the Kansas City Royals staff, will face the Mariners in his first 1998 appearance.

Appier will start the second game of tonight's doubleheader at Kauffman Stadium, opposing Ken Cloude. In the opener, Jeff Fassero goes against Brian Barber.

Appier, who has averaged 12 wins a year for the Royals since joining the club in 1990, has been out all year after undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery on March 24. He injured the shoulder in a fall at his home.

The 30-year-old right-hander is 10-3 lifetime against the Mariners.

Note

-- First baseman David Segui will have arthroscopic knee surgery on his right knee following the season. Segui's knee has bothered him since it locked up Aug. 6 in Detroit. An MRI exam at the time revealed no cartilage damage. Segui's average has dropped from .330 to .307.
