The Seattle Times' Guide To Fall Arts -- Visual Arts

Last fall, thanks to the Seattle Art Museum's much-marketed Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, every art museum, performing group, cafe and pasta shop in Seattle was claiming some connection to the great Renaissance master. This fall, get ready for Egyptmania.

Starting Oct. 15, SAM is showcasing a traveling exhibition of Egyptian treasures plucked from the University of Pennsylvania Museum's extensive Egyptian collection. The show is called "Egypt, Gift of the Nile," and is billed as providing "a well-rounded picture of ancient Egyptian culture." The big show-stopper is supposed to be a 12.5-ton tomb wall that SAM is hoisting onto the second floor of the downtown museum.

If you're looking for something a few millennia more contemporary, Tacoma Art Museum's big fall show, opening Sept. 27, is "Ceramics from the Marina Picasso Collection," a show of ceramic works made by Pablo Picasso and now owned by his granddaughter. Opening Aug. 29 is a show of "visionary" art at the Bellevue Art Museum, and, on Sept. 18, a survey of the history of American comic strips at the Frye Art Museum. For those whose fall plans include a trip to Portland, a traveling exhibition of paintings by Monet from the Musee Marmottan in Paris opens Sept. 18 at the Portland Art Museum.

Henry Art Gallery's main fall show, opening Nov. 5, is called "Deep Storage, The Arsenal of Memory." It was organized in Munich and features work by more than 40 prominent American and German

modern and contemporary artists who use notions about archive and storage as themes. Artists whose work will be included are Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg and Joseph Beuys.

Best bets

At Grover/Thurston Gallery, cast-glass sculpture by Portland artist Judy Hill will be on view in September, with a show of new work by popular artist Fay Jones in November. (Hill, Sept. 3-26; Jones, Nov. 5-28)

At Meyerson & Nowinski, the Rorschach pattern-like paintings by Seattle painter Ken Kelly will be on view in September, followed by a show of Ginny Ruffner's fanciful glass sculptures in October. Later in the fall comes the Renaissance realist works of Gloria DeArcangelis and painted photo works of Randy Hayes. (Kelly, Sept. 3-Oct. 11; Ruffner, Oct. 14-Nov. 8; DeArcangelis and Hayes, Nov. 11-Dec. 20)

Howard House, one of Seattle's newer, more energetic galleries, has picked up several artists who used to be with the now-defunct Linda Cannon Gallery. Mark Takamichi Miller is doing some of the more interesting abstract painting these days, while the lacey, patterned paintings of Susan Dory hint at domesticity polished with a glossy sheen. (Miller, Sept. 5-29; Dory, Nov. 7-30)

Woodside/Braseth Gallery will show new work by Alden Mason, whose big, busy paintings are equal parts humor and pathos. Joseph Goldberg's luminous, minimalist abstract paintings are among some of the most compelling works coming out of this region. (Mason, Sept. 17-Oct. 31; Goldberg, Nov. 12-Dec. 15)

Francine Seders Gallery will show work by Seattle artist and writer Barbara Earl Thomas, whose allegorical paintings are powerful blends of storytelling and testimonial (Nov. 6-29)

Greg Kucera Gallery is featuring John Buck's carved-wood sculptures about environmental degradation and the West (Oct. 1-Nov. 1)
