Times' Kingco 4A, Metro Basketball All-Stars

The Seattle Times went small in choosing the boy and girl Players of the Year in the KingCo 4A Conference. Becki Ashbaugh, Bothell's 5-foot-6 point guard, was chosen girls Player of the Year. Jerry Petty, Garfield's 5-10 court leader, was selected boys Player of the Year.

Both helped their teams to the league's best regular-season record. Ashbaugh led all girls in scoring (19.1 per game) during league play and helped the seventh-ranked Cougars to a 17-game winning streak and a 13-0 league record. Petty dominated defensively, teaming with his ultra-quick teammates to frustrate the rest of the league. He scored 24 points in the Bulldogs' 59-50 victory over second-ranked Franklin in the KingCo 4A title game.

The Bulldogs' unexpected success - they were picked fourth in the Lake Division in the preseason - also helped make Garfield Coach Wayne Floyd boys Coach of the Year. His team is 18-4, with its only in-state loss to Franklin, and ranked No. 1 headed into tonight's bi-district game against Lake Washington.

Roosevelt's Aileen McManus was chosen as the girls Coach of the Year. Her Roughriders (19-3) tied for the Mountain Division title and then won the league tournament by beating Bothell.

All selections were made based on input from league coaches.
