Teen Held In Stray-Bullet Case
PORTLAND - A teenager with gang ties and a previous conviction for shooting a gun in public has been arrested for allegedly firing a shot that traveled five blocks and killed a Vancouver, Wash., man.
The 18-year-old from Tigard was being held without bail pending arraignment on charges of murder and attempted murder, said Bill Williams, a Multnomah County deputy district attorney.
The teen was involved in a gang fight late June 7, the night the shooting occurred, Police Lt. Cliff Madison said.
Five blocks away, the victim, Kenneth B. Shanafelt, 39, and his wife were walking hand-in-hand along a downtown street.
The couple had come downtown to see the play, "Beauty and the Beast," and stopped by the waterfront Rose Festival Fun Center before heading home.
They were heading to their car when a stray bullet struck Shanafelt in the head.
Police said the bullet that killed Shanafelt was fired from five blocks away during the altercation, which involved at least 10 young men.
Police believe the 18-year-old was the only person who fired from among the two groups, Detective Sgt. Hefley said.
