Ex-Cougar Football Player Jackson Dies
LOMPOC, Calif. - Bernard Jackson, a record-setting running back for Washington State in the 1970s and a nine-year NFL defensive back, died Monday of liver cancer. He was 46.
Jackson set or tied 11 school records during his two seasons (1970-71) with the Cougars. He still holds three, all set in 1971: kickoff-return yards in a season (744), kickoff-return average in a season (27.6) and longest kickoff return (100 yards, against UCLA). His since-broken records included rushing yards in a season (1,189 in '71) and a career (1,779).
Jackson, who attended high school in Los Angeles and Pierce Junior College in Tacoma, was the starting free safety for the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII. He also played for the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Diego Chargers.
