Northwest -- UW Pitcher Fans 13

Washington's all-time strikeout leader, Jake Kringen, fanned 13 batters in eight innings as the Huskies beat Portland State 9-1 yesterday at Graves Field in both teams' first Pac-10 North game of the season.

Kringen, a junior left-hander from Elma, broke the Husky career strikeout record last week and now has 190 in his two-plus seasons at the UW. Yesterday, he and reliever Wayne Lee, who pitched the ninth, combined to face only three batters over the minimum. Kringen (5-2) allowed three hits, walked none and allowed one earned run in his fifth straight victory.

Shortstop Kevin Miller extended his hitting streak to 13 games by getting three hits. He has batted .612 during the streak. Jim Na drove in three runs, and Jamie Porter doubled, tripled and scored twice for Washington (17-11-1).

OLSON RECOVERING FROM SURGERY

Benji Olson, a sophomore guard on the Washington football team, is recovering after undergoing a microdiscectomy yesterday to relieve a bulging disk in his back. The surgical procedure removed a fragment that was pressing against a nerve root.

Olson is expected to resume physical activities in about two weeks but will not participate in Washington's remaining spring practice sessions.

HUDOCK REJOINS SOUNDERS

Goalkeeper Dusty Hudock has signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Sounders, joining the two-time defending A-League soccer champions for a second tour of duty.

Hudock, a former UW player, was with the Sounders in 1994 and 1995 before going to the Colorado Rapids in the inaugural Major League Soccer draft last year. He started nine matches for the Rapids in 1996 but was waived Wednesday.
