Class AAA Playoffs / South Kitsap 41, Woodinville 29 -- S. Kitsap Capitalizes On Woodinville Turnovers
TACOMA - South Kitsap scored 27 unanswered points in the second half last night off four consecutive Woodinville turnovers to beat the Falcons 41-29 in the Class AAA football quarterfinals at Lincoln Bowl.
Senior running back Donovan Dashiell, who had played only four downs in the past four games because of a hamstring injury, carried 27 times for 297 yards and five touchdowns for South Kitsap (12-0). Dashiell was the Narrows League MVP and led the league with 1,314 yards.
Dashiell, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior didn't enter the game until the second quarter and scored touchdowns of 27, 33, 12, 4 and 83 yards.
"He made a big difference for them," said Woodinville Coach Terry Agnew, whose team finished the season 10-1. "He changed up their offense in a hurry. That kid can play."
But Agnew said the deciding factor was the turnovers.
"It was the turnovers that killed us," he said. "You can't do that against these guys. They are a good football team."
Woodinville turned the ball over on three consecutive plays in the third quarter after Marques Tuiasosopo's third TD, a 28-yard run, had put the Falcons up 29-14. The senior quarterback rushed for 93 yards on nine carries and completed five of 12 passes for 68 yards with two interceptions.
Pat Coniff led Woodinville's rushing attack with 207 yards on 22 carries.
The string of decisive turnovers started with a Matt Bussman interception that was turned into a 33-yard TD by Dashiell.
Then South Kitsap's Brett Maves recovered a fumble that led to a 12-yard Dashiell TD.
The third TD in a nearly five-minute span was set up by an interception by Tim Sams. Dashiell carried the ball all eight times on a 48-yard drive concluded with 4-yard TD run that gave the Wolves their first lead, 35-29.
It was the first time Woodinville trailed all season.
The Wolves' final TD also came off a turnover, a fumble by Coniff at the 17. Dashiell then dashed 83 yards for the final TD with 7:30 to play.
"He's so special," said SK Coach Ed Fisher of Dashiell. "They've never seen a back like him this year. He's as good as they get."
South Kitsap will play Richland next Saturday in Kennewick in a semifinal game. Richland rallied to beat Mead 34-27 in overtime yesterday in Spokane.
Woodinville had jumped to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter on two Tuiasosopo TDs and a field goal before South Kitsap cut it to 17-14 with a 19-yard pass from Rob Minnitti to Tim Sams and a 27-yard gallop by Dashiell.
