Slain Woman Had Sought Protection

EATONVILLE, Pierce County - A 19-year-old woman who was killed in her home early yesterday had tried but failed to get a restraining order against her boyfriend, authorities said.

Her 14-month-old son was wounded by a gunshot to the head, police said. He remained in critical condition this morning at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma.

Leia Kelsey died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, a spokeswoman for the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office said. Her 19-year-old estranged boyfriend has been booked into the Pierce County Jail.

A Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman said the man, who was not the baby's father, had left the home last week.

Kelsey had filed a petition Friday in Pierce County Superior Court for a restraining order to keep the man away from her.

Court Commissioner James Marshall denied the request, saying he found no domestic violence or harassment.

"I've looked at it. I don't know that I would do anything different," he said after the death.
