Simpson Paper Plans To Close Evergreen Mill, Idling 388

WEST LINN, Ore. - The oldest continually operating paper mill in Oregon will close in September, ending 107 years of operation and laying off 388 workers.

Seattle-based Simpson Paper Co. said it has not found a buyer for its Evergreen Mill, which went on the block six months ago as part of a restructuring.

Evergreen Mill makes high-quality, coated commercial-printing paper and some recycled paper products. It will operate until outstanding orders are filled.

The mill went up for sale in January along with four other Simpson mills around the country. Two have been sold; the sale of two more is under discussion.
