Schaller Can't Pass Muster In Romanian Open

Top-seeded Thomas Muster won his 11th tennis title of the season, breaking the ATP Tour record set by Pete Sampras last year with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over fellow Austrian Gilbert Schaller in the final of the $1.38 million Romanian Open in Bucharest.

Hockey

Boston defenseman Al Iafrate could face yet another operation on his right knee after an MRI exam found damaged cartilage.

"It's obviously a setback for Al," Bruin Coach Steve Kasper said. "We're not sure what it means, but we'll have to explore all possibilities in terms of his rehabilitation."

Boxing

Julio Cesar Chavez showed the determination and ring skills earned in 98 fights as he wore down David Kamau Saturday to win a unanimous decision and retain the WBC super lightweight title.

Chavez survived a head butt that opened a gash over his left eye in the first round to improve his record to 96-1-1 and 31-1-1 in title fights.

He is headed for a possible $15 million payday in a planned May 5 bout against Oscar De La Hoya.

Track and field

Canadian Bruny Surin won the 100 and 200 meters, beating American Dennis Mitchell convincingly each time in the Kobe (Japan) International track and field meet. Surin won the 100 in 10.11 seconds to Mitchell's 10.36, and the 200 in 20.42 to Mitchell's 20.70.

Water polo

Hungary's national water polo team beat Italy 11-10 to win the World Cup in Atlanta and the top ranking for the 1996 Olympic Games. Russia earned the third spot with a 10-8 OT victory over the U.S.

Rodeo

An 18-year-old bull rider was thrown, trampled and kicked in the head by a 2,300-pound bull in rodeo competition in Lakeside, Calif.

Paul Coronado of Santee, Calif., lost his grip and fell beneath the bull about three seconds into his ride. He was in critical condition and on life support at Sharp Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

"Oh God, it was heart-stopping," said Gene Palos, chairman of the San Diego County Deputy Sheriff's Association rodeo. "I know guys get hurt out there, but every time you see it it's horrifying. My only concern is that he recovers."

Coronado is ranked 10th in bull riding in the International Professional Rodeo Association's Western Region.

Cycling

Laurent Jalabert added 36 seconds to his overall lead in the Tour of Spain. He won the 95-mile 15th stage of the 21-stage race by five seconds over the Spaniard Jesus Montoya.

It was Jalabert's fourth stage win. Weaving through the hilly country and the streets of Barcelona, he stretched his overall lead over Spaniard Abraham Olano to 5 minutes, 56 seconds.

Volleyball

Tara Cross-Battle and Elaina Oden led the U.S. to a 15-9, 15-10, 4-15, 5-15, 15-12 victory over Brazil in the championship match of the Women's World Volleyball Grand Prix in Shanghai in Beijing.

Field hockey

Australia defeated South Korea 4-3 on penalties to win its third straight Champions Trophy, and the U.S. finished third in the women's field hockey tournament in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

The U.S. beat Germany 4-1 on penalties, the first time in the history of the tournament a European team failed to finish in the top three.

Reigning Olympic champion Spain beat Argentina 2-1 for fifth.
