Brooks Named To Run Vocational Institute

SEATTLE - Norward Brooks, former state, county and city official, has been named director of the Seattle Vocational Institute (SVI) at an annual salary of $62,400.

Brooks is a former King County assessor and elections director, Seattle comptroller and state employment security commissioner. He also is a visiting professor at Seattle University, where he teaches a course on public budgeting. He has a doctorate in educational administration and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Washington, a master's degree in business administration from Seattle University and a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and physics from Southern University, Baton Rouge, La.

SVI, formerly the Washington Institute for Advanced Training, became part of the Seattle Community College District in 1991. The vocational school offers short-term job-training programs, such as medical-office administration, computer-based accounting, dental assistant, and adult basic-education and English-as-a-second-language classes.

Brooks replaces Leroy Drake, who is now special assistant to Seattle Community College District Chancellor Charles Kane.
