Prep Basketball Northwest Shootout -- Oregon Boys Get Best Of Washington
PORTLAND - Need some sound effects to describe Washington's 109-103 loss in the boys Northwest Shootout All-Star game with Oregon?
Pffffft.
That's the sound of Washington's 27-10 first-half lead being blown away by Oregon.
It was 27-10 with 14:53 left in the half, but 35-35 with 7:29 left.
Splat!
That's the sound of Washington's shots hitting the backboard in the second half.
In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Washington made just five field goals (that's right, five ).
"It's a talented bunch of kids who hadn't practiced together," said Franklin's Ron Drayton, an assistant coach for the Washington team. "When you get a bunch together like that, you never know what's going to happen. But tonight we saw what happens. Everyone wanted to cast a three (pointer) up."
Washington was 10 for 33 from three-point range. Washington ended up shooting 12 for 40 from the field in the second half, but many of those field goals came late.
After leading by as many as 15 points late, Oregon watched its lead dwindle to 105-101 with 20 seconds left when Lake Washington's Donald Watts made a three-pointer.
Oooh, aaah. That was the sound of the crowd watching Watts at the University of Portland's Chiles Center.
Watts was dazzling, scoring a game-high 37 points. The future Washington Husky had it all: three-pointers, driving layins, turn-around jumpers and one thunderous slam dunk.
Washington had to be wondering what happened in the first half.
Behind Watts, it jumped to the 17-point lead. Watts scored eight of Washington's first 10 points and 12 of its first 17 points.
However, Washington trailed 46-45 with 3:22 left in the half after guard Earl Brown made a driving layin for Oregon.
The Oregon rally was keyed early by state Player of the Year A.D. Smith of Eugene's Churchill High, who scored eight of his 12 first half points in a three-minute span.
He thrashed underneath, grabbing loose balls and rebounds. The dirty work earned him six trips to the free throw line, where he was perfect.
The MVP award went to Daanyal McKelvey of Portland's Cleveland High, who scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. The 6-foot-5 forward even topped Watts slam dunk with an alley-oop slam off a pass from teammate Jeff Peart.
