Prep Track -- Sweep In 1,600, Long-Jump Victory Pace Hazen Boys

RENTON - A one-two-three finish in the 1,600 meters and Yaphet Warren's long jump victory helped the Hazen boys took the first-day lead in the Seamount League track and field championship meet at Renton Stadium yesterday.

Hazen scored 47 points in yesterday's four boys finals. Renton was next with 25 points, followed by Highline with 21.

In the girls meet, Kennedy held the first-day lead with 40 points over four finals. Highline scored 26 and Mount Rainier had 21.

Warren leaped 21-6 to win the boys long jump. James Day led Hazen's one-two-three sweep in the 1,600 with a winning time of 4:26.7, followed by Jason Lopata in 4:27.3 and Toby Stitzer in 4:31.8.

Renton's Travis Coddington won the boys discus with a heave of 172-5 1/2, and Highline's Breck Ivy took the javelin with a 176-foot loss.

Kennedy had two first-place girls finishers yesterday: Alison McDowell in the shot at 36-9 3/4 and Caitlin Skeel in the triple jump at 34-7.

Hazen's Jenni Nelson was the winner in the girls 3,200 meters in 11:56.7. Mount Rainier's Terina Cook won the high jump at 5-2.

The meet concludes tomorrow at Renton Stadium. Top qualifiers advance to next week's Sea-King District meet, joining qualifiers from the Metro League. The Class AA state meet will be at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl on May 26-27.

The Metro League Championships got under way yesterday at West Seattle Stadium in Seattle.
