7 Local Semifinalists For Merit Scholarships

A total of 160 students in King and Snohomish counties were selected as National Merit scholar semifinalists for 1994-95.

About 15,000 semifinalists were selected nationwide out of more than 1 million students who took the 1993 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. Those who received the highest test scores, about one-half of 1 percent of each state's high-school graduating class, were selected as semifinalists.

There are a number of additional requirements for becoming a finalist, including meeting high academic standards, taking the SAT test and being endorsed by the school principal.

Students qualifying as finalists will compete for about 6,700 Merit scholarships, which will be announced next spring.
