Horse Racing -- Quarter-Horse Race Marred By Accident
RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. - Noblesse Six outran Darlin Sixarun and previously undefeated Major Rime in the $1.6 million All American Futurity yesterday.
The event, the richest in quarter horse racing, was marred by the worst accident in the history of the race.
Doo Dominate, a brown colt, broke both front legs 100 yards from the finish and had to be destroyed. A second horse, Ghost Witha Most, suffered a compound fracture of the foreleg 200 yards into the race. He was being treated by a veterinarian.
Jockey Chris Zamora, unaware of what had happened, waved his whip as Noblesse Six crossed the finish two lengths in front of Darlin Sixarun in 21.35 seconds, the fastest since the race was extended to 440 yards in 1973.
Doo Dominate was trailing when he went down in front of the stunned capacity crowd of more than 10,000 at the biggest race of the year in New Mexico.
Billy Peterson tumbled over the horse's head and Doo Dominate narrowly missed rolling over him. Peterson was not seriously injured.
