Olympic Festival -- Local Rowers Capture Gold

ST. LOUIS - The U.S. Olympic Festival wound to a close with a big day by a young gymnast and reviews by organizers who said the 10-day event was a success from all angles.

Doni Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo., won two gold medals and a silver. The 13-year-old finished with three golds overall.

Five state residents won gold medals in rowing. Katie Maloney of Seattle and Ananda Senftleben of McChord were members of the wining women's four with coxswain boat.

Julianne Zimlich and Amy Mecklenburg of Seattle won the gold in the junior women's pair without coxswain. They tied with a boat that included Federal Way's Julia Jarvis, but were awarded the gold based on overall points earned.

Kirkland's Amy Turner was a member of the first-place boat in the women's eight competition.

Kennewick's Derek Robinson won the gold medal in racquetball with a 7-15, 15-5, 11-10 win over Scott Reiff of Coral Springs, Fla.

Sumner's Andrera Tibeau won the gold medal in women's weightlifting in the 101 1/4 pound cetagory with a combined lift of 308 1/2 pounds.
