Associated Grocers Repeats As Top Private Company
The largest privately held companies in Washington state posted combined 1993 annual sales of $16.13 billion, down from $16.36 billion in 1992.
Seattle-based Associated Grocers Inc. topped the list for the fourth year in a row. Simpson Investment Co. came in second, followed by Darigold Inc., Food Services of America, Lanoga Corp., and Stevedoring Services of America.
Five companies are new to the list, including Ocean Beauty Foods, a Seattle-based seafood processor, Cowles Publishing Co. in Spokane and Diamond Parking, a Seattle company debuting at a rank of 85. Other newcomers include McCarroll Enterprises and North Coast Electric Co.
The beleaguered forest products industry was hardest hit, suffering setbacks from environmental concerns, logging restrictions and a flat economy.
For example, problems led East Side Trading Co., a Spokane manufacturer and wholesaler of lumber, ranked 105 last year, to merge with an out-of-state company, said one-time owner William Bickel, who is now general manager.
Another business, Brazier Forest Industries of Seattle, also dropped off the ranking. Brazier has shut down its Hawaiian division, leaving mills in Washington state and Oregon, said owner John Brazier.
Brazier, ranked 101 last year with more than $65 million in revenue, exports, imports and manufactures lumber, Brazier said.
Despite the downturn - his comany posted about $50 million in sales in 1993 and expects that figure to drop to $40 million in 1994 - Brazier is hopeful about the future. He expects growth in 1995 with sales of $60 million to $70 million.
"We've been going 29 and a half years and I expect to keep going," Brazier said of the business he started in 1965. "We're the only ones that built a new sawmill in Oregon. I guess that seems foolish, but we're making a profit on it."
Don't tell Columbia Vista that lumber products belong to a depressed industry.
Despite the odds, Columbia, an export cutting mill, heads the list of the top 10 companies to watch, based on growth estimates. Columbia optimistically projects growth of 100 percent for 1994.
How?
"We're pretty bullish on the way things are headed in the export market and on the domestic side too," said Jeff Woodside, chief financial officer. "We're a smaller niche player and very tightly managed."
One of Columbia's major markets is Japan, Woodside said.
Much of the same heightened environmental consciousness that has hurt some loggers has helped boost trash revenue.
For instance, Rabanco Ltd., a Bellevue environmental management company that handles everything from collection, disposal and recycling, ranks 44 with more than $100 million in revenue, up from last year's rank of 90 and more than $70 million in revenue, said Warren Razore, president.
Private companies in the top 100 list employed 66,829 people in 1993 in manufacturing, retailing, transportation, seafood processing and fruit growing, among other industries.
Retail represents the largest sector of surveyed firms with 32.4 percent, followed by wholesale, 20.8 percent; manufacturing, 14.2 percent; construction, 14.1 percent; transportation, 5.3 percent; service, 1.0 percent and high-tech, 0.3 percent, with various other industries representing 11.8 percent.
"With the relatively flat economy, we were anticipating seeing a flat list and we were surprised that a lot of these companies were able to not only maintain their revenue but even grow, and some dramatically," said Maria Callaghan, marketing coordinator in the Seattle office of Arthur Andersen.
Some of the most dramatic growth happened at Print NW/Six Sigma in Fife. Print NW, ranked 115, is the only company to significantly emerge from last year's list of top 10 companies to watch. Its sales of $57.5 million are up 48.8 percent from 1992 sales, said Kurt Dammeier, who with his father, Brian, runs the company.
That growth, coupled with projections for a 24.6 percent increase to $71 million in 1994 attracted a lucrative offer to merge with Quebecor, a Montreal, Canada, printing company.
The deal is expected to become final in late June.
"They are growing exponentially," Callaghan said. "They've just gone gangbusters."
Print NW went from being a traditional printer of manuals for the software industry, including Microsoft, to copying diskettes and CD-ROM in the last few years for many of the same customers. The company made the change after reviewing its mission statement and determining that the proliferation of on-line data could render some document printing obsolete.
In other industries, construction companies overall showed "very strong growth" in 1993, said Bob Carlile, a partner at Arthur Anderson.
Alpac Corp., a Seattle beverage distributor that ranked 11th last year, and Itron Inc., a Spokane computer firm that ranked 89th last year, dropped off the list because they became part of publicly traded companies.
Several companies have new out-of-state owners or partners, eliminating them from the listing. These include Pacific Trail, a Seattle outerwear company purchased by a Chicago company, Gai's Seattle French Bakery, which merged with a San Francisco business and Stusser Electric Co. in Seattle.
The list includes only privately held companies based in Washington state with 25 or more employees and with annual revenue of at least $60 million.
The companies cannot be subsidiaries of public companies. The list excludes businesses in the areas of financial services, insurance, professional services, real estate brokerage, utilities and nonprofit organizations because of the difficulty of tracking and separating revenue derived from gross sales or a percentage of commissions.
Washington's Top 100 Private Companies
Here are the Top 100 private companies in the state, according to the Seattle office of accounting firm Arthur Andersen and U.S. Bank of Washington, which compiled most of the list.
Information is gathered from results of surveys that Arthur Andersen mailed to more than 1,200 companies and cross-checked with available reference sources. The ranking is based on 1993 revenue.
The Seattle Times added some companies to the list after conducting additional interviews.
