Chieftains Get Inside, Outside Help In Basketball

Looking for basketball players who can be effective both inside and outside, the Seattle University Chieftains looked inside and outside the state of Washington.

Mack Junior, a 6-foot-3 guard from Rainier Beach High School, signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Chieftains next fall.

The school also signed Mark Lamprecht, a 6-7 post player from Service High School in Anchorage, Alaska.

Junior, who led the Vikings with a 17-point average and was named honorable mention all-Metro League in his sophomore and senior seasons, is expected to bolster the Chieftains' perimeter game as a shooting guard.

Junior, who also competed in cross-country and track at Rainier Beach, isn't timid with his outside shot.

"Mack is a unique player because of his varied offensive skills," Chieftain Coach Al Hairston said. "He can shoot the jumper or put the ball on the floor. But shooting is definitely the strength of his game."

Junior plans to pursue an electrical engineering degree.

"The small class size and academic reputation are important," Junior said. "Coach Hairston wants to win, and he knows how to do it."

Lamprecht, a McDonald's all-America nominee, averaged 10.3 points and 7.3 rebounds for Service, which finished sixth in the Alaska state championships.

"Mark has the ability to contribute at a couple different positions," Hairston said. "He's aggressive, attacks the boards and runs the floor. He could play anywhere from the small forward to center spot."

EGAN TO RUN FOR SEATTLE U.

Puyallup High School's Jenny Egan has signed a letter of intent to participate in cross-country for Seattle University.

Egan, who finished eighth at this season's state championships, has qualified for state the past three seasons.

"Jenny will compete for one of our top three spots and will strengthen our team tremendously," Coach John Crawford said. "We should compete for a national top-10 ranking next year."

UW SIGNS SOCCER RECRUIT.

Ryan Edwards, a midfielder from Fremont, Calif., signed a letter of intent to play soccer at the University of Washington.

Edwards, who led Mission San Jose High School to the league championship the past two seasons, is the fifth player signed by the Huskies this season. Edwards led the league in scoring and was named most valuable player by the San Jose Mercury News.

"I think we've done a good job for ourselves with recruiting this year," Coach Dean Wurzberger said.

VOLLEYBALL COMMITMENTS.

Whitman College has received verbal commitments from two volleyball players from the area - Stephanie Meier, a 6-foot middle blocker from Kennedy High School, and Jennifer Hoppe, a 5-10 outside hitter from Lynnwood's Meadowdale High School.

LINEMAN GOES TO CHICAGO.

CHICAGO - Former Shorewood High offensive lineman Tim Bunson has enrolled at the University of Chicago and will play football for the Maroons next season.

Bunson, 6-1 and 240 pounds, earned all-Western AAA Conference honors for the Thunderbirds.
