United Takes Delivery Of Its First Airbus Jetliner

CHICAGO - United Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus Industrie jetliner, a 154-seat A320 short-to-medium range aircraft that competes with The Boeing Co.'s 737.

United ordered 50 of the European jets in 1992, undoing a long tradition of buying Boeing airplanes exclusively. The carrier will take delivery of 21 aircraft by the end of 1994 and the rest by 1998.

United remains Boeing's largest customer and plans to launch Boeing's 777 in May 1995.
