Everett District Juggles Borders For New Schools

The Everett School District seeks ideas for names of its new schools scheduled to open next year. Suggestions should be made in writing by Friday to Debbie Brady, Special Services Department, Everett School District, 202 Alder St., Everett, WA 98203.

EVERETT - The two schools scheduled to open next fall may have the luxury of few students and lots of space. But after a few years, they may need portable classrooms like every other school.

Proposed attendance boundaries for Everett School District's third high school and fifth middle school will be presented to the public tonight from 7-9 at Cascade High School, 801 Casino Road, and the same time tomorrow night at Everett High School, 2416 Colby Ave.

The new high school, just north of Mill Creek, will open in 1994 with 667 students because it will serve only the ninth and 10th grades. This way, current high-school students will be allowed to graduate without changing schools. When the school is open for ninth through 12th grades in 1996, its enrollment is expected to be about 1,900, said Marijo Rymer, district spokeswoman.

The new middle school, in the Silver Firs housing development, is expected to open with 669 sixth-eighth-graders, 161 fewer students than Evergreen Middle School. The boundary committee purposely kept the enrollment at the new middle school lower because the southeast portion of the district is expected to grow the most, Rymer said.

"Within two years, the enrollment is projected to be between 750 and 800," she said.

The draft attendance area for the new middle school generally is the southeast corner of the district east of 35th Avenue Southeast and the neighborhoods south and southeast of Silver Lake above 132nd Street Southeast.

Other proposed changes for middle schools include:

-- Moving the boundary between Evergreen and Eisenhower further north along Evergreen Way, 75th Street Southeast, Beverly Boulevard and Madison Street.

-- Moving the boundary between North and Evergreen further north along Pacific Avenue.

Everyone south of 132nd Street Southeast would attend the new high school. Other changes include adding the neighborhood east of Interstate 5, north of the city limits and south of Madison Street to Everett High School's attendance area.

The boundary committee is expected to make its recommendation to the School Board on Nov. 22. Afterward, each school will form a planning and advisory committee.

Anticipated 1994 enrollment for secondary schools based on proposed attendance boundaries: Everett - 1,540. Cascade - 1,977. High School No. 3 - 667 (only opening with ninth-10th grades in 1994). North - 760. Evergreen - 830. Eisenhower - 791. Heatherwood - 815. Middle School No. 5 - 669.
