Class B Cross Country -- Davenport's Briggs Takes 3Rd In Row
PASCO - Chamberlin Franklyn didn't expect to beat Tim Briggs. He only hoped to give the two-time defending state Class B boys individual cross country champion from Davenport a race.
He didn't. Briggs, a senior, ran away with his third consecutive title in 14 minutes, 56 seconds, more than a minute ahead of Franklyn, a senior from The Bush School in Seattle.
Still, Franklyn said he was satisfied with his second-place finish on the three-mile course at Sun Willows Golf Course.
"I've gotten stronger since last year," said Franklyn, who placed eighth a year ago. "But he's (Briggs) just a really strong runner. I was happy with my race."
Franklyn's time, 16:00, was 30 seconds faster than his time at state last year.
In the girls' race, Kymi Quackenbush of Christian Faith, last year's individual titlist, finished third behind Chrissy Peterson of St. George's and Debra Emberson of Pomeroy. Quackenbush, a senior, was suffeering from the flu.
"I was throwing up before the race. But she's (Peterson) a really good runner and she deserved it," Quackenbush said.
Quackenbush said her family planned to move to Texas next week. "My parents have been in Dallas looking for a house, and I've had to take care of my brothers," she said.
Seattle Lutheran, last year's boys and girls team champions, finished second in both races as St. George's reversed last year's results -- it finished second in both races in 1992 -- to capture both team crowns.
St. George's boys finished with 28 points to beat Seattle Lutheran's total of 47. Bridgeport-Mansfield also had 47, but No. 5 runner Chris Parsons beat out Bridgeport's No. 5 runner to give Seattle Lutheran second. In the B classification, only the top four are counted toward overall scores. The fifth runner counts only when teams tie.
St. George's scored 18 to win the girls' race to Seattle Lutheran's 35. Kevin Riedl (12th overall) and Karen Riedl (14th) were the top Seattle Lutheran runners for their respective teams.
