Kayak Point Golf Course Has Unique Dining On Greens

Restaurant review Kayak Point Restaurant, Kayak Point Golf Course, 15711 Marine Dr., Stanwood. Open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Full liquor, major cards, 652-9676.

For those whose experience with the "19th hole" of any golf course is tantamount to stopping in at the caddy shack for a soda, the Kayak Point Restaurant will come as a pleasant surprise.

This is not a snack bar - although there is a snack bar if you're in that much of a hurry to hit the links - but the restaurant itself is nicely appointed with a good menu, a spacious bar, big-screen television for the sports addicted and a nice panoramic view of the greens and trees on the Kayak Point Golf Course.

Because golfers seem to know no clock, the restaurant opens early - in this case 7 a.m. - and it offers a substantial breakfast spread.

For those truly in need of protein, there's steak and eggs for $7.95. A hefty selection of omelets range from $4.25 for the plain to the $5.75 chef's special (ham, green pepper, onions and mushrooms).

There are also lighter sides for lighter appetites and the coffee never stops coming.

Lunchtime is sandwich time, hot or cold, with some almost-dinner time items added on.

The French dip, $5.95, is a high stack of beef on a roll with plenty of au jus.

The Kayak Special Burger is an especially generous meal, with two quarter-pound patties, bacon and all the other dressings you'd expect. It comes with a choice of potato salad or fries for $5.75.

There are several late luncheon items as well. The Teriyaki Chicken, $7.95, was a well-prepared chicken breast in a mild sauce with pineapple. The meal came with mixed vegetables, a roll and dessert. It also came with mash potatoes and gravy. While that might be a fitting accompaniment for chicken fried steak, it didn't really jell with the teriyaki chicken. Perhaps a little rice?

The dinner menu at the Kayak is pretty evenly split between fish, fowl, meat and pasta.

The house New York is a reasonable $13.95, the filet mignon is $15.95. The dinner version of the chicken teriyaki is $10.95, chicken cordon bleu is $12.75 and the chicken fettuccine is also $12.75.

Seafood favorites include a black cod cooked in wine for $12.75 and halibut, baked or broiled, for $12.95.

The Kayak Point Restaurant (and golf course) is 12 miles west of Interstate 5.

You take the Tulalip exit. Marine Drive is an especially pleasant daytime route during this season, the fall colors are just beginning to take hold and there are stops along the way where it's easy to take in a view of the water.

The restaurant is a good place to stop either coming or going.

Neighborhood Eats is a regular Thursday feature of the Seattle Times. Reviewers visit restaurants unannounced and pay in full for all their meals. When they interview members of the restaurant management and staff, they do so only after the meals and services have been appraised.
