Peach: Hard Rock With A Big Guitar Sound

Who they are: Mark Adler, 26, guitar, vocals. Shawn Allen, 29, drums. Nick Lynam, 24, bass. Rick Roberts, 24, guitar, vocals.

If you've followed the Seattle music scene for a while (as in before you-know-what became the hottest thing), you may recognize the names in Peach. Rick Roberts was the original bassist with the Posies. Mark Adler played in folk-rock duo Like Rain, and Shawn Allen played in Room Nine, a psychedelic, jangly '80s band. Together with Lynam, a Chicago native whom Allen met in a bar at a bachelor's party, they make up Peach.

Their sound: They describe their sound as "hard rock with a kind of a sort of a '70s classic rock feel to it" and "big guitar rock, but not heavy metal."

They list influences from the Flaming Lips and early David Bowie to the Pixies and Dinosaur, Jr.

They've mostly opened for bands like Sister Psychic and Lazy Susan, and their first album is due out this winter.

Roberts has a day job doing "mail room stuff" in an office, Adler works in a record store, and Allen does technical computer support in the same office as Roberts. Lynam, who has a degree in business finance, is unemployed.

During a recent chat, band members described their musical shapings. The first albums they remember buying: There is a collective groan and Allen asks, "Do we have to follow that format?" referring to Sound Check's question-and-answer style.

Uh, OK. Next question. What was their first concert? Adler says he saw Elton John in 1975 with his father. "I had a hip dad."

"Ooh, that may be the first album I bought," says Roberts.

Allen saw the Subhumans. A silence falls on the group, and everyone looks at Lynam, who is meticulously rolling a smoke. "Oh, are we going through first shows for everybody?" he asks.

"Nick's is going to be, like, Slayer," jokes Adler.

"It was Todd Rundgren & Utopia," says Lynam.

"I don't know, I would have respected him more for Slayer," says Roberts.

Where to hear them: If you like what you hear on InfoLine, you can see the band perform at RKCNDY this Saturday at 8:45 p.m. Check showtime.
