Huhs To Leave Council -- Four Announce Intent To Run In Mercer Island

The Mercer Island City Council race this fall will include two incumbents and one open seat, for which a three-way scramble appears to be shaping up.

After two terms on the council, Al Huhs, an attorney with a Bellevue consulting-engineering firm, says "It's time for new blood and new ideas. I believe in term limits."

Mercer Island council members Judy Clibborn and Linda Jackman, both of whom were first elected in 1989, said last week they will seek re-election.

Two announced candidates for Huhs' spot are David Clancy, chief counsel for the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, and Tom Newell, owner of an automobile brokerage and detail shop on Mercer Island. Linda Wenning, a CPA with an office on Mercer Island, says she is "seriously thinking about it."

The filing week is July 26-30.

Clancy, 51, chairs the Mercer Island Open Space Conservancy Trust. He also has served on the island's Planning Commission and as chairman of the school levy committee.
