Bellevue Volleyball Coach Moves To Redmond

Steve Trachy, the most successful active volleyball coach in the KingCo Conference, has resigned from his position at Bellevue High to take the head coaching job at Redmond High.

"I just thought this was a good opportunity to develop a good strong program with a little larger school," Trachy said. "I don't know whether I can produce the same kind of results at Redmond or not. We'll have to wait and see. They haven't been to state before. We hope to certainly take care of that."

Trachy, 40, guided Bellevue to the past four straight KingCo titles and five overall in 12 years as the Wolverines' head coach. Under Trachy, Bellevue qualified for the Class AAA state tournament six times, finishing as high as eighth in 1991.

"My aspirations are to win a state championship, and my thought was this could facilitate that," he said. "There's no guarantee."

Even with the opening next fall of a second high school in Redmond, Redmond High is expected to have an enrollment near 1,400. Bellevue's is about 800.

"We're certainly elated to have him," said Dennis Rieger, Redmond athletic director. "He's done a whale of a job over the years."

Trachy will continue to teach at Tillicum Junior High in the Bellevue School District and he'll remain at Bellevue High as the head track coach. He'll also coach the Newport High sophomore basketball team next winter.

Three different sports at three different high schools doesn't seem to bother Trachy.

"To me it's just coaching kids," he said. "I've never worried much about it."

Trachy replaces Gina DeMatteis, who resigned after one season at Redmond.

Redmond hires Olmsted -- Dave Olmsted, a three-time high school all-American and graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, has been hired as head wrestling coach at Redmond High.

Olmsted, 25, replaces Brett Racicot, who will head the wrestling program at Redmond's Eastlake High School, which opens in the fall.

"He has tremendous credentials," Rieger said.
