Meadowdale's Caisse, Seattle Prep Are No. 1 -- Two-Time Champion Upset In Girls Singles
PULLMAN - Second-seeded Amber Caisse of Meadowdale upset the top seed in the girls singles championship while Seattle Prep walked off with the girls team title in the Class AA state tennis tournament.
Caisse, a Meadowdale senior who won a state title as a Lakeside freshman, posted a a 6-3, 7-6 upset victory over No. 1-seeded and two-time defending champion Lisa Hart of Sunnyside in yesterday's finale at the Washington State University Tennis Center.
Seattle Prep won the girls team title with 13 points. Mount Rainier and Meadowdale tied for second with with nine points. Defending champion Lakeside finished fourth with eight points.
Caisse, who finished third the past two years, breezed through her morning semifinal match with Erin Weller of Lindbergh, 6-1, 6-0, before defeating Hart in the afternoon finale. It took Hart three sets to finish off Lara Botts, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinal. Hart was treated for a leg cramp in the championship match.
Seattle Prep's top-seeded team of Maggie McDonald and Elisabeth Frisby teamed up to beat Laura Ragee and Jill Friedman of Roosevelt, 6-1, 6-3 for the girls doubles championship. Third place went to Julie Kirkpatrick and Hillary Stamm of Lakeside.
Jenny Emerson and Moya Seitz of Mount Rainier beat Jeni Davis and Kelsey Zweibel of Seattle Prep 7-5, 7-5 in a match for fourth and sixth places. It was an emotional tournament for Jeni Davis, who filled the spot earned by her sister Amy Davis. Amy was killed last week in an auto accident.
Top-seeded Jamie Caplinger outdueled his brother and teammate from Battle Ground High, John Caplinger, 6-0, 6-3, for the boys singles title. They helped the Tigers to the boys team title.
Top-seeded Dan Araiza and Thanh Tang of captured the boys doubles championship with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 win over Vaughn Emerson and Randy McAlpin of Mount Rainier.
