Yugoslavia Banned From 1994 World Cup Soccer Play

FIFA, world soccer's governing body, today banned Yugoslavia from the 1994 World Cup.

FIFA said it made the decision in view of continuing United Nations sanctions on Yugoslavia, now consisting of Serbia and Montenegro.

The announcement dashed hopes of the soccer-crazed nation that an exception would be made to allow its team to compete in the competition that climaxes in 1994 in the United States.

The Philippine Bar Association today condemned Little League Baseball International for stripping a Philippine team of the Little League World Series title without due process.

"Without any protest from any team, and without any hearing, it stripped our team of its world title," the lawyers' group said in a statement. "In effect, the tournament committee acted as accuser, investigator, prosecutor and judge. . . . "

An Oct. 17 match in Beijing between Iran Barkley, super-middleweight champion, and challenger Doug DeWitt was postponed because of financial disputes and because Barkley has been slowed by an elbow injury, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said today.

No new date was set.

William Wheeler, of Seattle-based Wheeler and Associates, was the main U.S. promoter for what would have been the first professional boxing bout in China.

Top-seeded Petr Korda breezed past Andrei Cherkasov 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the $775,000 Swiss Indoors tournament.

-- Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria upset sixth-seeded Zina Garrison 6-4, 6-4 today to advance to a quarterfinal match against Steffi Graf in a tournament in Leipzig, Germany. Maleeva's older sister, Katarina, ousted Judith Wiesner of Austria 6-0, 6-4 and will face Anke Huber of Germany. Top seeds Jana Novotna and Conchita Martinez also advanced.

Richard J. Dunn, a University of Washington English professor, has been appointed to the NCAA Committee on Infractions. He replaces Milton R. Schroeder of Arizona State, whose term expired.
