Flamingo-Killer Nabbed In Banff
BANFF, Alberta
Jason Laberge, the Vancouver flamingo-killer who escaped a British Columbia prison two weeks ago, has been arrested in Banff.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Laberge was apprehended with another man after leading officers on a chase through the woods.
Laberge and Kevin Riste, of Maple Ridge, B.C., were charged with possession of stolen property.
They are scheduled to appear in Banff provincial court Monday.
Authorities said other charges are pending.
Laberge, 20, gained wide attention after beating six flamingos to death with a broom handle in Vancouver's Stanley Park.
He was sentenced to eight months in prison for slaughtering the birds.
He also pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and mischief charges.
His lawyer said peer pressure and an antidepressant drug that Laberge was taking led to the rampage.
He escaped from a minimum security prison May 13.
