White Center Face Lift Gets Started A Bit Early

The White Center business area is getting a face lift a little sooner than expected as construction crews under contract to King County tear out the median on two blocks of 16th Avenue Southwest below Southwest Roxbury Street.

Workers for Gaston Brothers Excavating say they expect to finish removing the median by the end of the month, said David Crain, project manager. White Center business leaders have complained about the median for years, saying that if it were gone there'd be more room for parking.

That will now be the case. County plans call for repaving the street and putting in several sections of angle parking, planting small trees along several parts of the sidewalks, and cutting ramps to make curbs more accessible to people using wheelchairs.

"It sure opens it up," said Steve Teasley, president of the White Center Chamber of Commerce.
