UCLA's Sedwick Wins Pac-10 Heptathlon Title

TEMPE, Ariz. - Tonya Sedwick of UCLA won only one of three events but still took the women's heptathlon title at the Pacific-10 Conference track and field championships.

Sedwick, who won two of the four events Monday night to grab a 92-point lead, finished up last night with a total of 5,548 points. She won the long jump at 19 feet, 9 3/4 inches and placed second in the javelin and third in the 800-meter run.

Oregon's Kelly Blair finished second with 5,404 points. Defending champion Peggy Odita of Stanford was third at 5,274.

Others in the top 10 were Washington's Sonia Forster (5,115), Oregon's Kamala Kohlmeier (5,110), Arizona's Noel Nixon (4,770), UCLA's Sheila Burrell (4,720), Washington State's Jill Montgomery (4,705), Washington's Shelly Pascoe (4,657) and, Arizona State's Mary Hertz (4,560).

In the men's decathlon, defending champion Pedro da Silva of Oregon set a meet record of 17-0 3/4 in the pole vault to take over the lead through eight events. The previous best Pac-10 vault was 16-2 3/4.

The rest of the conference track and field championships will be contested Saturday and Sunday nights at Sun Angel Stadium.
