Brandon Named Pac-10 Player Of Year

Oregon guard Terrell Brandon has been named Pac-10 Conference men's basketball player of the year and Arizona State forward Jamal Faulkner has been named freshman of the year in balloting by coaches.

Brandon, a 6-foot junior, averaged 26.6 points per game, the third highest average in Pac-10 history, trailing Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), who averaged 29 points for UCLA in 1966-67, and Mel Counts, who averaged 26.7 for Oregon State in 1963-64.

Brandon also led the league in steals and ranked third in free-throw shooting, hitting 84.4 percent.

Joining Brandon on the 10-member all-conference team are Ted Alibegovic of Oregon State, Isaac Austin of Arizona State, Ronnie Coleman of USC, Brian Hendrick of California, Adam Keefe of Stanford, Don MacLean of UCLA, Harold Miner of USC, Tracy Murray of UCLA and Brian Williams of Arizona.

Faulkner averaged 15.1 points and 6.2 rebounds. Others named to the all-freshman team were Dwayne Fontana of Arizona State, Jordy Lyden of Oregon, Khalid Reeves of Arizona and Shon Tarver of UCLA.

WOMEN'S TEAM

-- Washington senior center Karen Deden and senior guard Laurie Merlino have been selected to the 10-member Pac-10 all-conference team and Husky freshman forward Tara Davis has been named to the league's all-freshman team.

The conference player of the year is Stanford guard Sonja Henning, who averaged 15.8 points, 7.4 assists and three steals.

Other all-conference players, as selected by coaches, are: Lisa Leslie, USC center; Judy Shannon, Oregon State forward; Tricia Stafford, California forward; Rehema Stephens, UCLA guard; Tricia Stevens, Stanford center; Tammy Story, USC guard; and Julie Zeilstra, Stanford forward.

Leslie, USC's 6-foot-5 center, was voted freshman of the year. She averaged 19.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. She is the first freshman in the five years the Pac-10 has had league competition to earn a spot on the all-conference team.

In addition to Davis and Leslie, other members of the all-frosh team were Natalia Mattick of Oregon State, Debbie Sporcich of Oregon and Natalie Williams of UCLA.
