Memorials Scheduled For Climbers

Memorial services have been scheduled for two Seattle climbers who died last week in the Cascade Mountains.

A memorial service for Kathy Phibbs, 33, will be tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at Kilworth Chapel on the campus of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. A buffet reception will follow.

Ms. Phibbs was the daughter of UPS President Philip Phibbs and his wife, Gwen.

A celebration and potluck for Hope Barnes, 32, will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the refectory of Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave. N.E. in Seattle. Call 522-1912 for information on the potluck.

Ms. Phibbs and Ms. Barnes died of hypothermia after an apparent fall at Dragontail Peak in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area in Chelan County. Both were experienced climbers, and Ms. Phibbs was recognized as one of the best women climbers in the country.

She attended Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma and was a history major at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif.

Besides her parents, Ms. Phibbs is survived by two sisters, Diana Phibbs of Tacoma and Jennifer Phibbs of Colorado; and by her grandmother, Dorothy Phibbs of Tacoma.

Memorial contributions may be made to Women Climbers Northwest of Seattle or to the Kathy Phibbs Scholarship Fund at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

Ms. Barnes was a two-time Olympic team rower and a doctoral candidate in medicinal chemistry at the University of Washington.

She is survived by companion Sprague Ackley of Seattle; by her mother, Mrs. August Meyer of Belmont, Mass.; her father, Dr. Benjamin Barnes of Lincoln, Mass.; by her stepfather, August Meyer of Belmont, Mass.; by six sisters, Faith Barnes of South Freeport, Maine, Mary Barnes of Stony Creek, Conn., Phoebe Barnes of Cambridge, Mass., Dr. Robin Barnes of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Nina Fletcher of Worcester, Mass., and Natalie Bent of Essex, Mass.; and four brothers, Benjamin Barnes of Northampton, Mass., Christopher Barnes of Lincoln, Mass., and Peter Meyer and August Meyer Jr., both of Essex, Mass.
