Man Pleads Guilty In 2 Bainbridge Island Shooting Deaths
PORT ORCHARD - A man accused of killing three people on Bainbridge Island 18 months ago pleaded guilty today to two of the shotgun slayings.
In a plea bargain, Douglas Stanfield pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of JayDee Phillips and second-degree murder in the death of Ty McCollough.
A third charge, accusing him in the slaying of Ann Rice, was dismissed.
The three were shot to death in March 1989 as they sat in McCollough's pickup truck in a remote area of Bainbridge Island. about six miles west of Seattle.
Stanfield will face 24 to 34 years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 1.
As part of the plea bargain, the prosecution and defense will recommend a term of 28 years and four months, said Warren Sharpe, chief trial deputy for the Kitsap County prosecutor's office.
The plea bargain was reached last Friday and made public in court today.
Judge James Maddock sealed some of the prosecution's information in the case. Sheriff's deputies apparently are looking for two other suspects.
A second man implicated by Stanfield had been charged in the case, but charges were dropped when Stanfield recanted his story.
``We do not believe Mr. Stanfield acted alone,'' Sharpe said.
Sharpe declined to say what motive prosecutors attributed to the slayings.
Charges were filed against Stanfield after he contacted investigators last November.
At the time, Stanfield was being held in the Snohomish County Jail in Everett on unrelated charges.
Stanfield has since said he invented his story about the crime because he was bored in jail and thought he might be paid for information.
