Yakima Stops Everett's Three-Game Win Streak
EVERETT - Catcher Garrett Beard's two-run homer in the sixth inning keyed the Yakima Bears to a 11-5 triumph over the Everett Giants in a Northwest League baseball game yesterday in front of 2,683 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The home run was the second of the season for Beard, who went 3-for-3. Yakima's victory snapped a three-game winning streak for Everett (4-3).
Saturday, Derek Reid's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 5-5 tie and lifted Everett past the Bears 7-5. Right-hander Lenny Ayres (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the victory.
Yesterday, Yakima scored four runs in the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. Starting pitcher Mike Sampson (1-0) picked up the victory. Everett starter Dan Carlson absorbed the loss. Everett shortstop Ricky Ward went 3-for-4.
Everett travels to Bend, Ore. for five games this week. Yakima, a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate, plays host to Eugene tonight.
