John M. Friedlander, Longtime Jeweler

A service was to be held today for John M. Friedlander, longtime Seattle jeweler who was executive vice president of Friedlander & Sons Inc., one of the Northwest's foremost jewelry stores.

Friedlander, known to family and friends as ``Jack,'' died Monday in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 79.

He was a great-grandson of the founder of the family business and worked with his brother, Paul S. Friedlander. Jack Friedlander retired several years ago.

He was one of the country's first certified gemologists and trained at the American Gemological Institute. He was a past board chairman of the Jewelry Industry Council.

He was a past president of Temple de Hirsch Sinai and active in the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, the Caroline Kline Galland Home for the Aged, Glendale Golf and Country Club, and the Pacific Northwest Jewelers Association. He also was a past master of West Gate Lodge of Masons and a member of Nile Temple Shrine.

In addition to his brother Paul, a former Port of Seattle commissioner, he is survived by his wife, Corrine; daughters Betty Lou Treiger, Jacqueline Goldfarb and Susan Schwartz; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

His service was scheduled at Arthur A. Wright Funeral Home, with burial in Hills of Eternity Cemetery.
