Rainier Beach Tries On No. 1 Ranking And Wins In Romp

Rainier Beach celebrated its promotion to the No. 1 ranking in the Class AA girls' state basketball poll by rolling to an 85-41 Metro AA League victory at Hale last night.

The Vikings, who lead the Mountain Division with a 10-0 record, improved their season mark to 13-1. They have not lost to Washington competition; their only loss was to Lynwood, Calif.

Rainier Beach used its bench strength and outside shooting to bury the Raiders 37-17 in the first half and 48-24 in the second half. Vikki Watson finished with 23 points, Trina Chatman had 14, Kiereen Ellis 12 and Tonya Carter 10.

Julie Baughn scored 12 points for Hale (2-8, 3-13).

-- SEATTLE PREP 52, AT WEST SEATTLE 48 - Mary Rogers scored 12 points and Beth Grandorf added 11 to pace Seattle Prep (9-1, 12-4), which took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter. Angie Evans had 17 points for West Seattle (5-5, 7-7), and Jennifer Johnson added 11 points.

-- LAKESIDE 79, AT CLEVELAND 36 - Chris Pagano scored 17 points, 10 in the second period, as the second-ranked Lions (9-1, 16-1) cruised to an easy Metro AA League victory. Lakeside dominated the middle quarters, outscoring the Eagles 22-9 in the second period and 25-5 in the third. Liz Pagano, Chris' twin sister, and Keisha Toms each scored 11, and Michelle Perkins added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Lakeside. Tamala Duncan scored 16 for Cleveland (1-9, 1-12).

-- EASTSIDE CATHOLIC 52, AT BALLARD 46 - Melissa Rogers had eight points and 16 rebounds to pace Eastside, which outscored Ballard 23-4 in the fourth quarter. Alicia Molitor scored 19 points and Maggie Bowers added 10 points for Eastside (4-6, 5-15). Ann Perry had 12 points and Melinda Zampera contributed 11 points for Ballard (3-7, 4-13).

-- CHIEF SEALTH 57, AT HOLY NAMES 29 - Snowwhite Siatunuu scored 19 points and Elaine Fotualii and Heidi Cayetano each had 10 for the Seahawks (7-3, 12-4). Holy Names dropped to 0-10 and 0-13.

Metro AAA girls

-- BLANCHET 57, AT FRANKLIN 52 - The Quakers had a strong third quarter to make the game close, but they could not overcome their problems at the free-throw line late in the game. Cindy Morrow led the eighth-ranked Braves (5-1, 15-3) with 19 points and Mary Larsen added 13 points. Franklin (3-3, 6-12) had three players score in double figures: Rhonda Smith with 14 points, and Melissa French and Mimi Macaraig with 11 points apiece. Franklin outscored Blanchet 16-8 in the third quarter.

-- GARFIELD 61, AT ROOSEVELT 36 - The ninth-ranked Bulldogs (4-1, 13-4) held the Roughriders to 13 second-half points and all 10 players scored. Elaine Webster scored 24 points and Nichelle added 10 for Garfield, which led 31-24 at halftime. Omara O'Brien led the Teddies (1-5, 3-15) with 16 points.

KingCo girls

-- AT LAKE WASHINGTON 66, WOODINVILLE 56 - Rachel Johnson scored 18 points and Shantai Barton added 16 points for Lake Washington (8-3, 11-6). Mande Butler of Woodinville (6-6, 12-6) led all scorers with 21 points. Andrea Mocherman contributed 15 points and Shannon Anderson scored 12 points in a losing cause.

-- AT NEWPORT 47, MERCER ISLAND 21 - Angie Peterson sparked third-ranked Newport with 13 points and 13 rebounds in a KingCo game the Knights (10-1, 15-2) controlled after a 14-0 first quarter. Marie Hartung added 11 points and 10 rebounds, with Megan Heyward grabbing 10 rebounds as well. Cold-shooting Mercer Island (5-6, 9-7) trailed 35-8 entering the fourth period.

-- AT REDMOND 79, BOTHELL 37 - Gina Estep led three players in double figures with 17 points. She also had seven rebounds to pace Redmond (8-3, 12-5). Shannon Osborne added 14 points and Missy Morris contributed 11. Bothell (5-6, 8-9) was led by Trisha Oberg's nine points.

-- SAMMAMISH 60, AT INTERLAKE 41 - Missy Stowell scored 23 points and Beate Brehm finished with 16 points to pace the Totems (10-1, 14-3). No player scored in double figures for the Saints (0-11, 2-14).

-- AT INGLEMOOR 51, JUANITA 37 - Senior Karen Guiberson scored 24 points, shooting 9 for 12 from the field, to power the Vikings (5-6, 8-9). Ellen Storey paced the Rebels (3-8, 4-12) with 15 points.

Seamount girls

-- AT KENNEDY 59, LIBERTY 31 - Senior Marisa Bernasek scored 20 points and hauled in 14 rebounds as sixth-ranked Kennedy (14-1, 16-1) cruised to the Seamount victory and pulled into a league-leading tie with Lindbergh. Amber Green had 15 for the Patriots (8-7, 9-7).

WesCo AA girls

-- BAINBRIDGE 50, MOUNTLAKE TERRACE 34 - Heidi Hills hit for 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Heidi Maron chipped in 12 points, as Bainbridge (8-2, 11-5) secured the Wesco game. Terrace (3-7) was led by Robyn Apel's 10 points.

-- AT WOODWAY 48, MEADOWDALE 42 - The fourth-ranked Warriors (10-0, 14-2) held a commanding 40-25 lead at the end of the third quarter. But the Chiefs refused to surrender and unleashed a half-court man-to-man press in the fourth quarter, outscoring Woodway 17-8 to keep the game close. Heidi Crosby led Woodway with 21 points and Dianne Preston added 12. Jo Leese scored 20 points and Lisa Wymore 11 for Meadowdale (1-9, 6-10).

-- AT LYNNWOOD 51, LAKE STEVENS 43 - The Royals (6-4, 12-4) forced 29 turnovers and staved off the Vikings (6-4, 12-4) in the second half after leading 22-11 at halftime. Star Blake had 13 points, Karen Wright 11 and Staci Anderson 10 for Lynnwood. Anne Touchette scored 18 for Lake Stevens, which outscored the Royals 32-29 in the second half.

-- AT MONROE 45, EDMONDS 42 (OT) - The Tigers, down by eight points going into the final period, had a one-point lead with about 20 seconds left but couldn't hold on and lost in overtime. Angie McGuire scored 22 points for Edmonds (3-7, 6-10). Monroe improved to 3-7, 5-11.

WesCo AAA girls

-- AT EVERETT 58, MARINER 50 - The Seagulls (4-6, 8-8) outscored the Marauders 21-9 in the second quarter and handed Mariner (6-4, 10-6) its third straight loss. Kristina Klarich collected 15 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore Sylvia Hahn added 12 points for Everett. Robbie Hayes had 13 points, Lisa Larsen 12 and Ronell Bracy 10 for Mariner.

-- SHOREWOOD 54, AT OAK HARBOR 25 - Kim Smith tallied 25 points as the Thunderbirds (10-0, 13-2) moved closer to the league championship. Angie Deden scored eight points for the Wildcats (2-8, 4-11).

-- AT SNOHOMISH 35, SHORECREST 18 - The Panthers (8-2, 11-5) held on to second place in the standings and the Scots dropped to 3-7, 5-11.

-- AT CASCADE 58, MARYSVILLE-PILCHUCK 38 - Lauri Byers scored 15 points, Jackie Jonas 14 and Denise Hardy 10 for the Bruins (5-5, 7-9). Nancy Williams had 10 points for the Tommies (2-8, 6-10).

Boys' games

-- KENNEDY 69, AT LIBERTY 67 - Four Lancers, led by Jamar Williams with 18 points, scored in double figures as Kennedy won the Seamount game in overtime. Liberty missed two shots as time expired and the score tied at 60. In the extra period, Kennedy earned a four-point lead, forcing the Patriots to foul. Pat O'Conor had 16 for the Lancers (10-5, 10-7), with Joe Shaw and Robert Chmielowski adding 14 each. Liberty (2-13, 2-15) was led by Brian Kowalenko with 21 points, Mark Pillo with 12 and Randy Fjeld 11.

-- AT CHRISTIAN FAITH 88, EVERGREEN LUTHERAN 72 - Four players, led by Jason Rowden's 24 points, scored in double figures for Christian Faith (1-9, 9-10). Mike Dethlefs had 14, Steve Dethlefts 12 and Geoff Ping 10. Evergreen Lutheran (10-8) had 17 points from Chris Green and 16 apiece from Ken Rodmyre and Jason Walden.

-- AT SUMMIT 94, OVERLAKE 66 - Billy Britt hit for 33 points, with Doody Wiggs and Aaron Skeem each adding 23, as the Invaders powered to the nonleague win. Overlake had a 34-point performance from Steve Rucker.
