Weightlifting Medalist Flunks Steroid Test

Indian weightlifter Subrata Kumar Paul became the first athlete to test positive for anabolic steroids in the 60-year history of the Commonwealth Games. Paul, who won two silver medals and one bronze in the 67.5-kg category, was disqualified and sent home from Auckland, New Zealand.
Canada's Nancy Sweetnam spoiled the bid of Australia's Hayley Lewis, 15, to win a fifth gold medal in swimming by taking the women's 200-meter individual medley in 2 minutes, 17.13 seconds. Lewis finished third.

Johnny Gross, 24, who lapsed into a coma an hour after winning a super-middleweight bout last May and never regained consciousness, died in a Syracuse, N.Y., hospital.
-- James ``Buster'' Douglas, opening training in Tokyo for his Feb. 11 fight with Mike Tyson, said he would ``make history'' by winning the world heavyweight title.
-- John John Molina retained his IBF junior-lightweight title by flooring Lupe Suarez twice and stopping him in the sixth round of a scheduled 12-round bout in Atlantic City, N.J.

Portugal's Rosa Mota, who led all the way, won the International Ladies Marathon in Osaka, Japan, by nearly two minutes in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 47 seconds. Japan's Katsuyo Hyodo was second in 2:29:36. Third was the Soviet Union's Valentina Egorova in 2:29:47.

A jockey, two owners, a trainer and an agent have been banned
from Beulah Park in Grove City, Ohio, for 60 days for possible involvement in race fixing, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
-- Chris McCarron swept the weekend stakes races at Santa Anita by riding Criminal Type to a half-length victory in the $163,800 San Pasqual Handicap.
-- GOLF
The United States Golf Association agreed in an out-of-court settlement to recognize the Ping Eye-2 square-grooved club, and the manufacturer agreed to stop making it. Karsten Manufacturing Corp. had sued the USGA for $100 million after the USGA refused to recognize the U-grooved clubs, which differ from the traditional V-grooved clubs.
