State's Holiday Death Toll On Highway: 5

-- Five people were killed on Washington state roads over the holiday weekend.

Ivan Chew, a 21-year-old Pullman resident, died Sunday night when the automobile he was driving struck a guardrail on a freeway exit in North Seattle.

Chew's car was leaving the northbound express lanes at Northeast 103rd Street when it left the roadway and struck the guardrail for what a State Patrol spokesman said was ``no apparent reason.''

The spokesman said Chew was not wearing a seat belt. A passenger in Chew's automobile suffered minor injuries.

Other holiday traffic fatalities reported by the patrol included:

James Randall, 45, of Carnation, who died after an accident Sunday on Highway 520 in Redmond. Troopers said Randall's car collided with three other vehicles as he tried to enter traffic from the road's shoulder.

A 16-year-old Port Orchard boy, Randy L. Smith, died Sunday when he was struck by a car while standing at the side of Interstate 5, about nine miles south of Tumwater, the patrol said.

Carol J. Snarski, 27, of Medical Lake died at 5:04 a.m. Sunday in a one-car accident on Interstate 90 about 4 1/2 miles west of Spokane, troopers said.

On Saturday, a Poulsbo woman died in a two-car crash on Bainbridge Island. Denise Witwer, 35, driver of one of the cars, was not wearing a seat belt in the 8:05 a.m. accident on a Kitsap County road six miles northwest of Winslow, the patrol said.
