It's beginning to have that Halloween feel

As October arrives, corn mazes, pumpkin patches and other harvest-season attractions are open throughout the region this weekend. Events vary from large, carnival-like venues to low-key, rural farms. Many farms offer large corn mazes in complex designs and smaller cornstalk or hay-bale mazes.

Among popular destinations, The Farm in Snohomish features a pumpkin patch with petting farm, wagon rides and gift shop and a 12-acre corn maze in the shape of Washington state, filled with historical and geographical facts about roads, towns and attractions throughout the state. For a leisurely experience, early mornings or late afternoons are usually less crowded. "Weekends in the middle of the month are the busiest," says Carol Krause, one of the farm's owners. "Even if the weather's nice this weekend probably won't be crowded."

Most farms offer great activities for kids but you don't have to be a kid to enjoy a visit. Piles of colorful pumpkins, gourds, dried cornstalks and other seasonal decor, along with farm-fresh produce, make a visit to farms a fall delight for all ages.
